But, as rentals go, Grossman came even cheaper than you think. Neither pick the Flyers traded away was originally theirs: the second was acquired from the Los Angeles Kings in the Mike Richards trade and the third-rounder was the return for sending Darroll Powe to Minnesota.
If you compare other teams' picks to the Flyers' picks, "cheaper" wouldn't be the word I use, since both the Kings and Wild will likely draft higher than the Flyers.

*I am aware the Flyers no longer have their own 2nd round pick in 2012.

I don't disagree with either assessment but it probably falls under the philosophy of someone who is up $10k in Las Vegas, then drops half of it and tries to reason that the loss "is house money." At least, that is what I have heard.

Exactly. That's retarded. Who cares what the picks are, or how you got them. A pick is a pick, and it's actually quite easy to figure out its value.

It's kind of like if you invested $50, and ended up with $100. But then you poorly invest that $100 and end up with $75. I don't care that your net is +$25, you just lost $25 on that latter investment.

I thought they did have their second round pick? I thought it was LA, their own, and potentially FLA's? Where is their second?

Their 2012 2nd rounder is with Tampa (Mez trade).

Edit: Argh. *shakes fist at losing to MSE

we'll probably end up with FLA's 2nd round pick this year as they're having a good season.

I love this trade. I'm a big fan of Grossman, I always trade for him in my NHL12 franchises lol. Anyways, as long as we keep our 1st rounders I could care less what we do with our 2nd/3rd rounders as long as we get an NHL ready player...

About forwards being converted to D-men... Brent friggin Burns, was a winger in the OHL, now he is IMO, one of the best all round D in the NHL. 40 points a year while being a PP QB and solid on D.

Agreed.

On another note, I wandered off to the Stars board to read about what they thought about the trade. In their thread about the deal there's a quote from Panaccio who apparently misread Grossman's numbers with Souray's, and thought we'd gotten some PP help with this deal. Boy, will he be disappointed.

I tend to agree. Especially if they sign him. The first is important; they should not trade it unless they get an impact player who is signed.

I don't hate it, but I'll like it more if he signs a new contract.
I like it. Grossman is exactly what we need now, and there's a good chance we can re-sign him too. He's only 27, so he could be a solid vet leader for years on the D.

There is also a good chance we get FLA's 2nd rounder this year. It's their option, but if they win their division they might give us their 2nd this year, rather than hold onto it for next year in case they slip.

Unless of course Homer trades it for Hal Gill or Bryan Allen.

seems like we overpaid...

this guy is a 3rd pairing defenceman who just played 16 mins against Det and 13 mins against LA

i guess he's better than Lilja but.. a 2nd and 3rd?
should have just been one pick, not two IMO

Now trade Carle for a 3rd back after the season and sign Grossman, was my immediate thought after hearing the trade.

Dallas fans said that GMJN had preliminary contract talks with Grossman early in the year but made no progress and they didn't pick up after that. Hope that isn't a problem if we indeed intend on resigning him.

overpayment

grossman, is exactly, the type of guy we need, for our playoff run.happy to get a guy like this. this guy is a bargain, compared to whatever the asking price for Luke Schenn, from Brian Burke would have been. the good news is, if we do keep our first, we will do what we always do, bpa, and he will be a gooder.
