Los Angeles Kings Offensive Rankings from 1998 to 2012

I gathered a year-by-year collection of data of LA's Goals Per Game Average and Offensive Ranking from 1998 through today. It is rather troubling to see that the Kings were able to average a higher goals per game during what was considered the "clutch and grab era" of hockey.

Los Angeles Kings Year-By-Year Offensive Rankings
YEARGPGRANK
2012 2.07 30
2011 2.55 25
2010 2.82 9
2009 2.46 27
2008 2.76 14
2007 2.72 20
2006 2.96 17
2004 2.50 18
2003 2.48 23
2002 2.61 16
2001 3.07 6
2000 2.99 5
1999 2.30 25
1998 2.77 8

It is hard to believe that LA's best era of goal scoring from 1998 to 2012 was the Andy Murray era.

Unsurprisingly, the only year they won a playoff round they were top 10...

And the only years in which they made the playoffs are 1998 (swept in 1st round), 2000 (swept in 1st round), 2001 (lost Game 7 in 2nd round), 2002 (lost Game 7 in 1st round), 2010 (lost Game 6 in 1st round) and 2011 (lost Game 6 in 1st round). Their playoff chances for 2012 seems doubtful, and if they do get there, a first round exit is inevitable.

Whats so hard to believe? Andy Murray was arguably the best coach the kings have ever had. He is by far my favorite

Interesting that in 2005-06, we scored 2.96 GPG, most in the post-lockout era yet we were ranked 17th while in 2009-10, we were in the top 10 with 2.82? Is the league slowly getting back to its low-scoring days?

The last time they finished last in goal scoring:

1969-70

Third year in the league and worst team in the league - missed playoffs

This year, well on their way to finishing last in scoring.

End result?

We will see if they make the playoffs...
