Everytime we lose an Expo, not only we lose the guy but it's also a reminder of how we lost this team so it's double pain for me. And for me, add a triple based on the fact that my father before he was a usher for the Habs, started at the Olympic Stadium and knew the Kid fairly well. They are together now.
My greatest memory was when the kid came back and hit his double and Dawson was unable to catch it. I was there. And I tell you, I've been to numerous live sports moments, and I've never heard such a loud crowd in my life to this day. That was just something else.
Still....can't beleive we let that team go. Cannot believe it. Rest in peace Kid. And after you settle down, would be great to see you reunited with a few baseball players.....Hey we knew know....maybe IF WE BUILD A NEW STADIUM.....HE WOULD COME.
Agree completely---kills me not to have my Expos to this day, especially on this day (I'm sure I snuck by your father out of the bleachers and into seats I didn't pay for at some point!). Carter supplied one of my most endearing memories from going to the stadium in 1979 - it was in late spring when we started to realize the Expos were gonna be good, and he hit a 2 run homer in a 2-0 or 2-1 game....but what I remember most is him throwing out a great basestealer (Bake Mcbride maybe?) at 2nd late in the game, and the Stade erupted in a standing ovation for over a minute - a standing O for a defensive play. After years of watching mediocre baseball, I knew at that moment the Expos had arrived as a legitimate contender with a legitimately passionate fanbase.
The best thing would have been Gary playing for the Expos when we had that great team if there wouldn't have been a MLB lockout. All the elements would have been in place for greatness.
Im gonna miss ya buddy!! I got my picture taken with him when I was 6 years old!! Ill never forget looking up and that big freindly giant and him having a big smile on his face!! RIP Gary
He was my favorite player when I was young, awesome personality, the kind of personality you want on any team in any sport club. Very sad to see him die so soon !
I will always remember his first couple of seasons in Montreal when barry Foote was the regular catcher and Carter had to play in the field or 1st base.
He was always wearing a hard hitter's helmet even when playing D in the outfield !
He was also always running full speed to the 1st base after a base on ball, like Pete Rose.
Loads of enthousiasm, charisma, and generosity for fans.
He learned a dozen words in French and was GOD in Montreal...

There's talk of renaming the Pie-IX metro station after him, since it's next to the Olympic Stadium.
