Two concern about Grossman. His giveaway, he has 25 and his takeaways he has only 4. He can play a very simple but very effective game. Not sure if he ever realizes that he is 6.4 230lbs.
25 giveaways isn't horrible for a Dman. Even Timonen has 23. Still much below Carle/Coburn. But it would be better if he could get more takeaways

He has 96 hits and 100 blocks, I think he knows his size, though I havent watched him a lot. Maybe being a Flyer will make him even more physical

I did not say horrible. Just pointing out. He does not play Timonen's type of minutes.

I said that if he can keep it simple and this is what he normally tries to do he can be very effective.

96 hits not enough and 4 takeaways is not such a great stat. It means he will watch and block you instead of take the puck.

A bit pricey considering that he might be a rental since Holmgren already was noncommital when asked about signing him but he kind of has to be since we don't know how he'll play here and if he'll like it as Holmgren noted in one of his interviews.

Having said this we absolutely needed help back there regardless and to have a snowball's chance in hell to make some decent noise in the playoffs and down the stretch here. Rangers are probably going to add to their rosters and so are other teams in contention so we couldn't just stand pat with our current defensive group.

We already have seen glimpses against the hard forechecking teams like the Rangers and Boston that Carle will be soft and like Holmgren noted most of our D players are "containment" type D anyway. We need somebody back there that will throw their weight around a little more although he sounds somewhat inconsistent with that..probably in the Mesz mold. I'm hoping Coburn starts picking up his physicality down the stretch as well. We have a decent blend of size now and skill..they just need to be more consistent. The whole team does of course..including the goaltenders. Luckily the team hasn't been consistently bad against the bottom or midtier teams but they have to get much better against the elite teams who are rounding out their games down the stretch even more.

Call me crazy, does anyone else think that acquiring Grossman will lead to trading either Coburn or Meszaros? For some reason I think Homer is hard after Nash still and might offer one of them in a trade.

I don't think so. From what I've read and heard so far, Grossman was being pursued by Holmgren for several months now, shortly after the Pronger injury. Stars only now decided to move him because they figured the assets were too good to pass up. Since Nash has only recently become available to other teams, there doesn't seem to be any connection.

I would wait abit before doing that though. Grossman has been good in the past, but really has struggled this season (well I guess as much as Carle/Coburn/Meszaros has.) I cant see Coburn going anywhere, but if anything Carle would be the best choice. From some of the quotes from the beat writers, it seems like their iffy if they want to resign him (at the cost that he wants). I think if you get a good offer for Carle, you should take it.

If not, I see Carle getting traded for a 3rd round pick (or so) in the up and coming draft. Similar to the Hamhuis early trade.

If Homer trades Mez/Coburn instead of Carle, I will lose all faith in our GM. This team doesnt need overrated Nash

thers NO way they keep Carle over Coburn..

Carle is one of the worst Dmen we have and he is expecting big $$, (HAHAHA)

were as Coburn just recently resigned, i would be stunned if they moved Coburn and kept Carle..

stunned and deeply saddened.

I love this. It reminds me of the trade for Joe Blanton.

Yeah, I said it.

Affordable mid-level guy who addresses a major weakness and thus makes it possible for the top-tier talent surrounding him to excel.

Trades don't have to be flashy to be high-impact, and Grossman could be exactly what the defense, Bryz, and the team need.

Ryan Bright @philabright

Nicklas Grossman paired with Andrej Meszaros, Matt Carle with MAB. Lilja and Gus are paired.

A trade that immediately popped into my head was the Brad Stuart to Detroit deal back in 2007-08.

Interesting. I think Grossman would be more suited to playing with Carle but I guess MAB-MEZ wouldnt work and Lavi prefers MAB to Gus

Grossman was at about 19 and Kimmo plays 21:36, I think you meant, 'he doesn't play Carle minutes'...

An interesting twist on this deal is that Holmgren has now contributed to setting the value of UFA defensemen before the TDL, and should now arguably expect to receive better offers than this for Carle.

Just makes one think.

Hopefully this means that Bourdon will play restricted minutes. 12-15, rather than the 15-19 minutes he has often been playing. He's really been better than I expected, but still makes too many sloppy plays in his own end.

Comcast-Spectacor is a multi-million dollar company. You'd think they could afford a HD camara.

The pairing of Carle-Bourdon is simply, terrifying.
