Hopefully Blake gets a chance with the Habs. After the fiasco with the whole "Bi-Lingual Coach" thing, this is definitely a great PR pickup for that franchise.

As for Gill, I don't expect a whole lot from him, but come playoff time I think we're safer with him back there than our current bottom pairing.

What you'll get from Gill:
- Leadership. The man oozes it.
- Mentorship.
- Veteran presence on the backend.
- Best PK'er in the league, bar none.
- Good gap control makes up for his lack of footspeed

What you won't get:
- Physicality. Big teddy bear.
- A good outlet pass
- Speed
- Mobility
- Any shred of offense
- He gets beat often to the outside.

He's strictly a 3rd pairing D that can rise to 2nd pair D if paired with the right guy. Your best bet is to shelter his 5-on-5 minutes and play him gratuitously on the PK.

Enjoy. I'll miss him.

I hope Gill and Josi are paired together. Move Klein down with Ellis. Then, you can start giving all three pairings more equal time, though Suter and Weber will still be the TOI leaders
My thoughts exactly on how the defense should be set up.

Hillen and Cube become permascratches. All is well.

Since Andrei Kostitsyn wasn't bundled with Gill for a first rounder, I'm guessing Poile has his sights set on a bigger fish for the upgrade upfront.

FYI: Gill and "size" do not belong in the same sentence together.

The PK just got better. That's worth the trade alone.

The conditional pick to you is if Blake plays 40 games with the HABS big club if not then there is no 5th round pick.

Gill probably plays with Klein, but for laughs I'd love to see Gill (6'7) and Boulion (5'8) paired together here and there. The NSH version of this old pic...

I like this trade. Blake was definitely struggling and needed a fresh start. Gill is pefect for our team. I think Blum is on his way out. i can smell a top 3 forward coming our way

Habs fan here...Hal Gill is a warrior in the playoffs. Good shut down PK defenseman, big reason why Habs PK is tops in league. Clears the front of the net and blocks shots. Good mentor for young defensemen. Diaz paired with Gill has overachived and Subban last year was better when he was paired with Gill.

I like this.

It was pretty much a 2nd for Gill in my eyes.

We will never see Slaney, he is a throw in.
Geoffrion wasnt gonna cut it for us. Hes getting surpassed by players like Spaling, Halischuk, Bourque, Beck, Latta, Watson, ETC.... And you know Montreal was trying hard for him. Its sad to see Blake go for what he has done for the State and that memorable game last year. But he wasnt gonna be more than a 4th line grinder for us. And his game this year was a definite set back.

I like the trade!

The more I think about it the more I would like to see Klein and Josi stay together, and Hill play with Ellis. The size difference would be hilarious, but it would allow Trotz to use Hall heavily on the PK and he could still toss him out there on a quick change on the road if he doesn't like the match up.

Habs fans, let me put it this way: the best asset we gave up was the second-round pick. Maybe Boomer can turn things around, but he looked totally lost in the NHL this season.

And yes, the boards are lagging pretty hard right now. If your post doesn't show up immediately then just be patient. It will show up soon. You may have a problem staying logged in. I recommend checking the "remember me" or "stay logged in" or whatever box. If you post a thread it will take FOREVER to show up.

We just made a move with the Habs. Any time something involves the Habs you can expect the board to end up on life support for a little while

For the guy asking how is Gill's first pass, I would say.

KEEP HIM AWAY FROM THE PUCK.

Terrible handling, terrible shot, terrible passes.

Best PK'er ever. Awesome leader. That's it.

Poile: "We have to give up a lot to make a deal at the trade deadline time."

Poile said he is still looking for a "veteran forward"

Habs fan here,

Gill is one of the main reasons why our PK has been excellent so far this year. He provides great leadership and mentorship to young players. He's the kind of player you want going into the playoffs, if his minutes are limited, he will be effective.

He will get beat on the outside quite often because of his lack of mobility, he's the true definition of a pylon sometimes and has no offensive game whatsoever. But thanks to his experience he will handle his minutes effectively and make the right play more often then not.
