The line of succession the last 35 years goes:

Orr --> Clarke --> LaFleur --> Gretzky --> Lemieux --> Jagr/Lindros --> Hasek --> Forsberg

I like the idea of this thread... it does put into perspective the most dominating player of a given half-decade.

I have absolutely no doubt that every knowledgeable hockey fan will agree with:

1970-1975: Bobby Orr and __________
1975-1980: Guy Lafleur and ___________
1980-1985: Wayne Gretzky and Mike Bossy
1985-1990: Wayne Gretzky and Mario Lemieux
1990-1995: Mario Lemieux and _____________
1995-2000: Jaromir Jagr and Dominik Hasek
2000-2005: ________ and _________

But fill in the blanks as you see it, as there are several legitimate candidates for those empty spots.

DEFENCEMEN

Orr-Park
1975-80
Potvin-Robinson
1980-85
Bourque-Coffey

Bourque-Chelios
1995-2000

Lidstrom-Pronger

Some of the later ones are tough to pick a second guy as the competition is tough. Langway in the early 80's, Stevens too but when? Niedermeyer in 2000-2005?

The torch passed as the best from Orr-Potvin-Bourque-Lidstrom - The 4 best from 1966-2005 and they overlap each other as the torch is passed.

I'd pretty much agree with that list, except that I'd choose Bourque, rather than Coffey, as my defenseman for 1985-90. While Coffey was clearly the better offensive defenseman of the two, I'd still take Bourque for his all-around game.

I initially had the list that way. But then I factored in playoffs, so I had to consider Coffey's importance to the Oilers dynasty.
