I am not at all sold on Tambo being the guy for the next phase of this rebuild. I think he needs to be more pro-active. Not trading Hemsky earlier could be a huge mistake.
But you have to look at the trades that you are quoting.
Holmgren traded a young 40 goal scorer with a longterm deal for Voracek, the 8th pick and a 3rd. Voracek has under-performed since being drafted. He is basically Sam Gagner. The reason this deal looks so good right now is that Carter has been a dud in Columbus and the Flyers got very lucky and had Sean Couturier drop into their lap.
How good would that trade look if the eighth pick was Scott Glennie and Carter had 25 goals right now.
Shero got James Neal, but gave up a very promising young dman in Alex Goligoski. They could do this because they had Kris Letang and a solid group of vets.
Chiarelli has made great trades as well (though I am not sure he would not want to have the Kaberle deal back). But he did so from a position of strength. And even so some of the genius has resulted from luck. Getting Seguin and Hamilton for Kessel was a big coup but if it had been Jaden Schwartz and Nathan Beulieu how would it look right now?
Finally, SJ got a Brent Burns as a UFA defenseman for Devin Setoguchi, Charlie Coyle and a pick that became Zach Phillips. Minnesota knew that they were likely not going to be able to sign Burns so given how good Coyle is I will bet they were happy with the return. SJ could afford to trade a prospect like Coyle and their first for a UFA because they have great depth down the middle and becuase they probably knew that had a great chance at signing Burns.
I am not saying that Tambo would have had the moxy to make any of these deals. In fact, I have serious doubts he would have. But what they all have in common is that the GM trading from a position of real strength is the one that came out ahead.
