For those bagging on Niemi, I get it he let's in some softies, but

1. Out D doesn't get a body in front of the shot, they get the tippy tip of their blade, the other teams players should be going for deflections, not ours.

And

2. Our D is having a rough time breaking out the puck and starting the rush, either weak clearances or blue line turn overs create high percentage chances for the other team. For all of our talk about puck moving defenders we are doing a poor job around the net and our forwards are doing a bad job checking to the puck and entering the zone creatively.

We DO have a sniper and his name is couture, clowes regression/murrays absence has had a HUGE impact on our play. This run is an ABERRATION.

I hope Niemi can steal us a few games during the playoffs.

I'm fine with weak goals, but come playoff times those are unacceptable

This isn't the best our defense can play, we have the guys to do it. They just need to play better

Which year? Pretty sure Niemi has not played a game 5 in Detroit ever.

He actually played very well in game 6, I thought we'd win that one.

The Wings played average over all. They had their moments... But over all, it was an average performance by the Wings. You nailed it...The goalie kept them in it until they could get some forecheck going.

When at team, elite or no, can hold the Wings to 28 shots (Sharks had a average game too)...You know they were not on the top of their game. Same for the Sharks. Two elite puck possession/high shooting teams playing average today.

I'll concede the third goal was all him, but the rest was a combination. At this point greiss is just the lesser of two evils and he will maintain a 2.5-3.00 gaa over and extended starting kick. Niemi bailed the D out several times in this game, but guys like burns and white continually do just enough to help him get scored on.

Niemi wasn't great, but I'm more concerned with our defense and our struggling top-6 players like Clowe. Clowe hasn't looked good at all, losing routine board battles and making terrible high turnovers. You know his heart is in it, but he has to find that consistency again because he's not carrying his weight.

Also Wingels is not a top-6 player. I'm surprised it took Tmac so long to pull him off the first line, because that line was completely useless with him on it.

The coverage on that Helm goal was just as bad as Niemi giving up the goal. Need to cut out the mistakes if they're going to turn this around.

I keep hearing complaints about injuries and certain players. I think if we have enough of a plan we should be busy enough and have the group to push the other team to a grinding challenge. I think Todd needs to get our guys in the right mindset. We need that locker room guy that can get the players ready, we have depth except for scoring right now but we need to push the pace and keep playing our game. Every team gets in a slump, I hate ours because the games are so close. Each line should have a guy that can get everybody else up to speed. If one guy gets hurt for a while every player should think of it as an opportunity to do something for the team rather than oh my gosh. We may need to bring in retired players that motivate to get us ready to compete. Come on stop slacking off. I know we are a team from the layed back bay but you have to stand up sometime.

By the way I forget who it was but I blame the guy who was guaranteeing a win the last few days for everything that happened in this game.

One does not insult the hockey gods thusly. They will smite you.

I felt our defensive depth is being tested on this road trip and all the better, I was okay with trading Murray, but I understand a lot better what a top 4 stay at home D guy does for you. We give up a ton of ice right now, and white i think is stuck between both styles of D, he's playing very badly and I hope he either figures it out or bandy gets starts.

I think wingels is a good depth player, he has the tools to succeed, but deshardins was doing fine up there. Move Moore up for clowe and see what happens

As I've been saying, we NEED an upgrade on defense. Niemi didn't play amazingly, but the D didn't give him much of a chance.

Wait, so all those signings in the offseason weren't upgrades?

Lost Seto and Heatley and no D upgraded?

Well don't hold your breath for any more changes. 50 contracts, no prospects, bunch of injuries.

I like our D the way it is. I really don't think it is a problem.

However, I will rescind my earlier desire to trade Murray. I now see his value to this team, at least until the offseason.

Whether or not you blame Niemi or the defense, Niemi has to play better than he has, and did today, in order for this team to make it to the finals.

Before you go there, the defense has to play better as well.

Give Clowe some PP Ups because he's been struggling.

Okay I'm done.
