Playoff cut is now at 5 games above .500 in East

Forgetting about games played as they will all have played the same # come season end,the Leafs would be in the playoffs playing 5 games above .500, with Atlanta, Montreal and Tampa Bay fighting for the 8th and last spot at 4 games over.

Tough like hell. Can't afford a blank road trip for sure!

It is worse in the West with the cut at 8 games above .500...

Of course. The only thing wrong with your theory is the fact they actually have to play those games.

Weren't we at the top of the table at some point too?

The shootout has resulted in a very effed up system. Technically it's 2 games above .500, because the loser point is just that; a point for a loss.

Jeez, the NHL may as well just have a win and a loss column like baseball!

I don't see the Senators or the Flyers sliding to the bottom of the table... neither the Capitals, Penguins, Bruins, Islanders and Panthers winning over .500 of their 40 games remaining !

Or you can say it's variable, cause hell if I'll agree that a shootout win/loss is really what the name implies. It's just a glorified tie game.

you have to take games played into account to give you a better idea of where teams will finish. Just doing a quick calculation of all the teams who are competing with us for the final playoff spots in the east. Assuming they all play at the same pace they are playing at to date, then the playoff picture would look like this

6. NJ 92.46 pts
7. TOR 90.9 pts
8. MTL 89.45 pts
9. TB 88.9 pts
10. ATL 88.83 pts

It should be close right down to the end
