Also, I may just be pessimistic, but this is going to suck really, really bad. Datsyuk is our offensive catalyst. Not only does he put up big points but he pulls all the toughest defenders too him all game.
It's a scope, athletes have this done every season, just takes a few weeks to heal.

Babcock said Henrik Zetterberg will replace Datsyuk on the line with Johan Franzen and Todd Bertuzzi. Valtteri Filppula will take Zetterberg's spot at center on the second line, with Cleary and Jiri Hudler.

If it's gotta be done, there's no better time than now. Got the record streak, got somewhat of a lead in the division, at least first round home ice is pretty much in the bank. Still almost two months until the playoffs.

One little silver lining is that Zetterberg looked awesome with Bert and Franzen during their brief time together during the Oilers game. Please let that continue

I think you might have underestimated Toews just a little bit...

not surprising that he was injured, as his play was below normal for 10-15 games. not as dynamic as usual, not controlling play as usual, playing passively, etc.

i wonder if that collision with toews triggered this injury.

These injuries to Datsyuk and Howard might actually be blessings in disguise. If they can manage to hold their ground without Pav over the next two weeks, Howard and Datsyuk should be nice and rested heading into the playoffs. Hopefully Zetterberg stays hot and Franzen picks his game up.

I don't know if "rested" is the word I'd use, injury recovery isn't a holiday. But at least they might be healthy.

Yeah, that looked like injury material to me.

There is none.

Wings lose 1st in west to the nucks during these two weeks and therefore super important homeice advantage against the nucks in the WCF (potentially)

Next two weeks is 7 games (2 against Chicago, 1 Vancouver and 1 Philly being the only "Big" games) after the final one in Philly they have two days off before coming home to face LA.

I would rather have him back for the playoffs at 100% the only bad part is can we score enough with him out of the lineup to keep us in first. If we don't do good in these 7 or so games he's out, we could go from 1st in the conference to 5th in a heartbeat. Time for Zee to fill in BIG TIME.

Also, would LOVE to see Tatar play rather than Cleary tonight...let's see what he can do.

He still has a wrist injury hence why he doesn't always take faceoffs. Perhaps it's chronic since he can't seem to do anything about it (hasn't had surgery in offseason to fix it etc)

Now we'll see what this team is made of. Dats has had an incredible year. He's never looked more dominant.

This would explain why Pav has been falling down so much recently and why he's also looked noticeably weaker on the puck (obviously still strong and well above NHL average) the last month or so.

Again, better now than later with a comfortable cushion in the standings and the playoffs a few months away. Also, it really does give other players a chance to get more minutes and perhaps find or develop their game a little, which is never a bad thing. Z's looked good the last few games, and now could be his chance to really step up his game leading into the home stretch.

Obviously, losing your best player hurts and this team, historically, has always missed Pavel more than other teams miss their star players, usually playing at a ~20 lower point pace without him compared to when he's in the lineup, which is astronomically large and, like I said, greater than the difference for other teams with their star player out.

I guess that answers why he hasn't been on top of his game lately. Certainly has looked slightly slower and not as dominant. Hopefully we hold on these next two or three weeks and when he comes back, kick it into overdrive to wrap up the western conf.

Glad Z has been better lately, we certainly need him to step it up now.

Last year when Datsyuk went down, Zetterberg put da team on his back. Let's see if that happens the next 2 weeks.

Well, Datsyuk was on fire between mid-November and mid-January - 39 points in 28 games in that time. Do that over a season and he's got the Art Ross and Hart in the bag.

But since mid-January it's been 10 points in 15 games, probably caused by injury, and the Wings still went 12-2-1 in that time span which shows that this team can buckle down and preservere even with a limping Datsyuk.

It's unfortunate for Pavel's career though as issues like this may keep him out of the Hall of Fame, he could really use an Art Ross or Hart or at least another top 3 finish.
