There was talk awhile back of the Habs taking Brassard in the upcoming '06 draft. Given he is Latendresse's center. And, I agree.
However, what do people think of Brassard in the Top Prospects Game last night?
Brassard certainly has the offensive talent but found he coasted some what late in the game and didn't always give 100% effort. Kids that do that in important games like the TPG tells me something (ie. Serge Bernier from the past).
Overall, I would not trade up to select Brassard but if he is there when the Habs select I would select him.
I found Bryan Little and the Mooseheads' player just as decent player, whom I would select before or equal to Brassard
I agree that it looked like Brassard was coasting in the Top Prospects game. And judging by his skills testing results (his combined ranking was 25th out of 36 skaters, salvaged only by a 2nd place finish in the puck control drill), it looks like he was coasting there too.
While there is always the chance that injuries were a factor, that kind of relaxed attitude might get him a knock from some scouts. The Top Prospects game is not normally looked at as just any All-Star type game, where it seems like maybe Brassard approached it that way?
As others say, it probably won't affect the opinions of the real scouts who see him frequently in game action, and it won't affect the opinions of those who have really seen what he can do. But perhaps it introduces just a little hint of doubt in a few minds here or there who might remember this disappointing performance.
Brassard is another soft offensive player. I don't think we need that kind of player. Bryan Little was impressive...if he is still available it would be a good pick. Staal reminded me of a young Joe Thornton. Size, offense and skating style is similar. I would like to trade up and draft him. I think the first three picks are unattainable. (Johnson, Kessel and Toews.)
We should have drafted his brother last year at #5. He looked pretty good in WJC. Then trade up and draft Jordan Staal this year. Start to make a good story.
Ryan Hillier I liked as a second round pick. He looks like a chippy player. With decent offensive skills.
What about Eric Stewart(Anthony Stewart's) kid brother as a late round pick?
Like alot of poeple say, you draft the best player available and adresse your weekness by the UFA and trades.
If Brassard is the best, they will draft him if not they won't.
I was big for Brassard before but after the Top Prospects Game I am not so sure we should draft him. Generally big games like the TPG is a good indicator of intangibles like a player's work ethic and character. Because they such important games to their careers. To see him float at times is a warning sign ie. Dan Cleary or Serge Bernier in past TPG.
I think we should trade and try and draft a franchise player like Staal. Reminded me a lot of a young Joe Thornton.
