Can't possibly be worse than BJ. And it's about friggin' time. Maybe he can catch a little fire and be a solid backup.
Is it possible that Johnson is going to be traded or...? I can't see us keeping 3 goalies for a significant length of time...doesn't seem to be prudent, nor is it Shero's style.
Who would Johnson be an upgrade for to have trade value? Well Philly maybe, but that is about it.
Nice. A lot of folks thought this guy could have won the Hobey Baker in '09 (He was a finalist), and he's struggled lately but I think the norm for his play is closer to last year than this one. He's a very good goaltender, and the NU faithful are excited about a potential start.

I do not blame him. I felt a little sick watching his play in the Buffalo game as well.
Heyooooooooooooooo.
WIshing it was something more than a one night back-up gig, but whatever. Going outside to acquire a back-up would be silly in my opinion. I'd really prefer not to spend an asset on someone who isn't going to play more than 3 or 4 games down the stretch...even when you acquire someone it doesn't mean they're going to do anything (Mathieu Garon's stint sure was memorable...I can't believe that guy has a ring with us). Johnson has played a grand total of 65 minutes of relief play with the Penguins in the playoffs (Garon played 24 minutes)...I'm really not that worried about replacing that, though I would like to see Thiessen get some time just to see if he's a potential candidate for the job. It sure looked like it was going to be automatic heading into this season, but he's struggled himself, and if he's not getting the back-up gig here next year I doubt he signs another one year deal to be the WBS starter.

Ummmm, how are we allowed to have 24 on our active roster? Also, I find it funny that the 3 horrible guys from the Buffalo game are all scratches tonight. Jeffrey, Orpik, and Johnson!

Not sure about Jeffrey but Orpik and BJ aren't being scratched. Both Orpik and Jeffrey played well in Philly on Saturday

Dejan K tweeted that Shero said the Pens were going with 3 for a little bit (however that's possible). If it's this time next week, and Thiessen hasn't played in any NHL games, I'd be surprised.

I was gonna say, why would Shero call it "temporary" right off the bat if Johnson is playing so poorly, and he has a tender in the minors who has succeeded at every level he's played at? Probably because Johnson has a bargain one-way contract, and he doesn't want to mess with that?
Anyway, if the Penguins can roll with three goalies, you're right. Thiessen should get a shot against the Blue Jackets on Sunday. He could be what Johnson was last year.
Pity Thiessen isn't playing like he was last year.
It's not like he has a really terrible record, without looking if I remember correctly he was 21-14 -?
I'd have more faith in Thiessen right now. Plus being up on the big squad they'll tend to insulate him more than, Fleury or Johnson. Take less risky plays.

I remember seeing this one time when I went looking for another rule at some point.
Quote:
16.13 Goaltender Exemption.
(a) On up to two (2) occasions during the course of the Regular Season and
Playoffs, each Club will be granted a Goaltender Exemption to its Active Roster limit.
Each Goaltender Exemption may last a maximum of forty-eight (48) hours. A goaltender
Recalled under this provision will not count against a Club's Active Roster limit.
However, for purposes of clarity, the Recalled goaltender's Player Salary and Bonuses
will be included in calculating a Club's Actual Club Salary and Averaged Club Salary,
and the Players' Share, for purposes of Article 50.
(b) Once a Club Recalls a goaltender under the Goaltender Exemption, it must
identify the Recalled goaltender and the injured goaltender who will be replaced on both
a regular NHL Player Transfer To/FromMinors form as well as the Goaltender
Exemption Form, attached hereto as Exhibits 26 and 27, respectively.
88
(c) The injured goaltender does not have to be placed on the Injured Reserve
List during the forty-eight (48) hour exemption period in order to exercise the Goaltender
Exemption.
(d) All three (3) goaltenders will be permitted to participate in warm-up.
(e) If the injured goaltender skates during warm-up and is determined by the
Club to be fit to play, and does in fact dress for the NHL Game, the Club will nonetheless
be charged with having used one of its Goaltender Exemptions.
(f) The Goaltender Exemption Form, and a completed NHL Player Transfer
To/FromMinors Form, attached to this Agreement as Exhibits 27 and 26, respectively,
must be filed with Central Registry by facsimile, in accordance with Exhibit 3 hereto,
prior to the Club Recalling a goaltender pursuant to this Section 16.13. Failure to file
both forms prior to any such Recall or filing more than two (2) Goaltender Exemption
Forms will automatically constitute a violation of the Active Roster regulation.
(g) A Club may use both forty-eight (48) hour Goaltender Exemptions
consecutively, provided that the required forms for the second forty-eight (48) hour
Goaltender Exemption must be filed with Central Registry by facsimile, in accordance
with Exhibit 3 hereto, prior to the commencement of the second forty-eight (48) hour
period.
I'd love to see Thiessen play at least 1 game, but I don't know if the team will even allow him that. Ideally, maybe against the Jackets on Sunday, before deadline day, would be the game to give him since the Pens kept giving the Isles to John Curry a few years ago.
The Pittsburgh Penguins have re-assigned goaltender Brad Thiessen to Wilkes-Barre/Scranton of the American Hockey League, it was announced by executive vice president and general manager Ray Shero.
Thiessen, 25, was recalled by Pittsburgh yesterday on an emergency basis and served as the backup goaltender to Marc-Andre Fleury during the Penguins’ 2-0 win over the New York Rangers. In 37 AHL games this season, Thiessen has posted a 20-14-2 record with a 2.88 goals-against average. Thiessen’s 20 wins rank fourth (tied) in the AHL.
They were showcasing Thiessen's bench sitting ability, which is a key for any back up. Watching the game, his posture wasn't perfect, but that will come with time.
