Give Cheechoo a shot?

Jonathan Cheechoo article

Here's somebody that I had all but forgotten about. With the injury to Langs, I know its out there, but I actually kinda agree with this guy. We know that Grachev isn't going to suddenly catch fire and get the offense going. and he at least knows how to score. its just a matter of if he can do it or not.

Worst case, he performs about as well offensively as Stewart. I mean, it seems like a pretty low risk thing and since it looks like we have 4th/5th locked up.

Thoughts?

EDIT: it keeps screwing up the link on me. its on bleacher report from 2/16

1) It's Bleacher Report and for the most part that is just an embarrassment to Journalism.

2) Cheechoo can't skate, he most likely won't even be considered.

He had his shot and really blew it in the preseason. If it was one game, sure, but I think grachev or cracknell should get the call.

Cheechoo is completely done at NHL level. As bleedblue said, he does not have the skating ability now to have any impact. He has 17 goals in his last 127 NHL games, and they came on teams (Ottawa & San Jose) that were more offensively orientated that us.

Other guys will rightly get the call before Cheechoo.

i couldn't really remember how he did over the preseason. I just quickly pulled up the rivermen stats and thought "oh yeah, i forgot about him." then I did a quick google search to see if there was any articles about how he was doing. bleacher report was the first thing that popped up.

His stats seemed pretty consistent with just about anyone else in Peoria, so I figured that we could give him a couple of games up here and see if anything sparks with him. At worst, I figured that it wouldn't hurt.

I understand that there are other people that have been ahead of him in line for callups, but I just thought I'd throw it out there. I guess file it under "Crazy Ideas".

Not totally crazy. It's definitely low-risk, high reward. We've just been down this road before, and it's pretty clear that the guy has lost it.

There's been plenty of opportunity to observe all of these guys side by side on the ice in Peoria. I suspect it will be Grachev with the call-up, but it won't be based on what anyone did in the NHL several years ago. I wish it weren't so, but Cheechoo physically can't perform at an NHL level any more in terms of skating. Any other tools he might have/had become irrelevant if you can't skate.

I think it's highly likely that what everyone else is saying is true... that Cheechoo simply doesn't have what it takes to play at the NHL level.

But you know what I figure, let's give him 2 games to show us if he can or not. What's the worst that can happen, he's a -2? What this team lacks is a shooter, a guy who can bury the puck. Cheechoo used to be able to do that up here, so why not give him a shot.

I doubt he does anything worth while, but it's not like putting him int he line-up will lose us the game.

Give him a shot, if he doesn't work out, can't say we didn't try.

A player needs to have a 200 ft. game to play in Hitch's system. Cheechoo is too slow to be effective on defence and in the transition offence. He'd be a poor choice as a fill-in on The Blues.

Agree with the others in that Cheechoo just doesn't have the legs anymore. Heart and hands are still good. PP specialist may be one role he could play. He's been solid in Peoria, but not dominating.

Also, he's missed the last several games after being boarded by Stortini. Haven't heard a timetable for his return.

Upon reading this thread's title I could only think "Give Cheechoo a shot of what?"

Agree on Cheechoo. As for Bleacher Report, I've talked to their founders and head writer in their offices in SF and basically it's not journalism, it's aggregating a bunch of high school and college kids to generate web traffic using their enthusiasm for sports. It's an SEO factory. They have signs hanging up in the big room and even on the elevator that ask, "What did you do to generate traffic today?" It's why all their stuff is done in 10-20 page slideshow format. I would never take it seriously as a source of anything, not even the umpteen million "15 hottest athlete girlfriend" slideshows.

It's more like a high-risk, low-reward. He's not going to magically regain his foot-speed and scoring touch at the NHL level so the chances of him producing anything resembling an offensive contribution are slim (Low/No reward). And the fact that he's a defensive liability would make the opposing team grin ear-to-ear at the chance to put a - next to his name in the +/- column (High risk).

What are we going to do with him? Have somebody carry him out to the circle on offensive zone faceoffs during the PP and hope he can just fire it in from the dot?

Amazing this guy scored 56 goals after the lockout. Joe Thornton must have been one hell of a playmaker.

The problem is that some people actually go their for news and articles. A bunch of people I know at Mizzou write stuff for them and it is good experience for the journalism majors. I don't know what is more reliable, Eklund or a rumor on Bleacher Report?
