Calculation of Final Point Totals for the Top 5 in the East

I'm extremely bored in class and decided to figure out what we have to do in our final 25 games to win the East. I understand that there is still a ton of hockey to be played and this thread may seem kind of pointless, but I thought I'd share it with you guys anyway.

Rangers- Currently 38-14-5 with 81 points (25 game remaining)
18-5-2 in our final 25 gives us a season total of 119 points
17-6-2 = 117 points
16-7-2 = 115 points
15-8-2 = 113 points
14-9-2 = 111 points
13-10-2 = 109 points

Devils- Currently 34-20-4 with 72 points (24 games remaining)
18-4-2 in they're final 24 gives them a season total of 110 points
17-5-2 = 108
16-6-2 = 106
15-7-2 = 104
14-8-2 = 102
13-9-2 = 100

Flyers- Currently 32-19-7 with 71 points (24 games remaining)
18-4-2 in they're final 24 gives them a season total of 109 points
17-5-2 = 107
16-6-2 = 105
15-7-2 = 103
14-8-2 = 101
13-9-2 = 99

Penguins- Currently 32-21-5 with 71 points (23 games remaining)
17-4-2 in they're final 23 gives them a season total of 107 points
16-5-2 = 105
15-6-2 = 103
14-7-2 = 101
13-8-2 = 99
12-9-2 = 97

Bruins- Currently 35-20-2 with 72 points (25 games remaining)
18-5-2 in they're final 25 gives them a season total of 110 points
17-6-2 = 108
16-7-2 = 106
15-8-2 = 104
14-9-2 = 102
13-10-2 = 100

By looking at these numbers I realized that by going 14-9-2 and giving ourselves 111 points in our final 25 we have a great chance at winning the East.

With that record Boston would have to go 18-5-2 in they're final 25 and they would still only finish with 110 points.

I understand that there is so much to be determined but I just thought it was interesting to see what kind of record we would need to win the East.

wow, nice job, man!! I was thinking about this yesterday, but way too lazy to actually do the arithmetic.

Those are pretty uplifting numbers...

Wow even if the Rangers play .500 hockey until the end they still finish with 109 points.

I think you mean 106 points. But that is still awesome.

Thanks for doing out the math!

Now calculate in all the head-to-head match-ups and evaluate further! Cheers.

So if the Devils win 18 more shootouts and lose 2 in shootouts they'll have a pretty nice record.

It's crazy, but at this point I'll be disappointed if we only have 111 points at the end of the season. How crazy is that?

Being up 9 points right now is a huge lead. Still gotta take care of business, but we are in great shape Would love to see us win the President's Trophy too.. we're what #2 in the league 3 pts behind Detroit with 3 games in hand

It's pretty wild to be this good so far...haven't seen this many wins in a long time

Nice work putting this together!

I think 107 points would be enough to take the conference. That's pretty much going .500 the rest of the way.

So for other teams to best that they would need 108 pts (Rangers have superior ROW to everyone).

I personally think Rangers ease their way to 111 pts and a #1 seed . Question is, will that be enough for a President's trophy? Detroit, Vancouver and St. Louis don't seem to be letting off the gas. Detroit just lost Datsyuk for 2 weeks, that should slow them down a bit.

I don't think NYR finishes first in the league. I'm going to say Detroit, but not by much.

Someone cares a little too much about another team..

Almost as much as I do by checking out your boards every so often.

Anyways, good work by the OP. Pretty sure you guys have #1 and division locked up but hell, we'll try our best to make it interesting and give you something meaningful to play for.

And thats really what its gonna come down to.

Devils need to take at least 4/6 points from them (and only give the Rangers 2) to have a shot at this. Rangers really just need to win 1 and grab another point or two and its pretty much over.

Gonna be there on the 27th and hopefully it will be as fun as the last time I was there earlier this month :p

Great thread, like everyone else said, thank you for taking the time to figure this all out.

Even if the Rangers finish first in the East (a nice accomplishment), though, it won't mean much if they can't put a solid playoff run together.

I agree. What happens in the West only becomes relevant if the Rangers make it to the Cup finals -- so there's really no point in worrying much about the West (aside from casual concern as a hockey fan).

I tihnk you have to get 6 and hold the Rangers to 1, even that would be tough. If you get 4 points you're only gaining 2, by the way how about we trade you Nash after we get him for Kovalchuk?

Helll no.

Kovalchuk is showing he's worth every penny of his contract and then some.

Guy's a beast.

Nash is a great player but Kovalchuk he is not.

Also, don't think we need a sweep. I think 4 is the bottom limit, obviously 5 or 6 would make it much more likely. Gaining 2 points outright in 3 games isn't a bad thing..

Knew you were kidding

Best thing about Kovy is that he plays with that emotion and passion.. When he fights, you can just see it. He loves playing the game and he loves competing and winning.

You'll never see more emotion in a goal celebration (well outside Anisimov I guess).

I'm dreaming a little here...never thought we'd be this close to it at this point in the season. So far this team has met and exceeded my every expectation...(except the PP)... but every time they lose they come back strong...every time you expect them to falter they pull one out. It's just amazing.
