Howson didn't strike again or whatever cheesy thing that is being said, this is a case of a player not having value because his contract is bad and his play has been bad. He makes terrible decisions on a nightly basis. The salary cap savings is huge and we got a 2nd and possibly 4th pick. Better return than I expected, thought we'd only get a 2nd.

Either was Vermette, he hasn't been in 2 years.
EXACTLY. I am really happy about this trade. I didn't think anyone would want Vermette. He is a 3rd line center with a 3.75 million dollar cap hit until 2014/2015. This gives us money to spend (hopefully we spend it wisely ) and hopefully it means they will start playing Johansen at C.

This is absurd that you guys are disappointed. We just got a fricken 2nd and maybe 4th and got to dump Vermette's 3.75 million salary without having to take back salary in return. Look at what Downie just got, I think we did pretty well with what we got for Vermette. Downie is better and cheaper and he got a low 1st and an AHL defensmen. Vermette got a 2nd and 4th/5th. Sounds pretty darn good to me.

This may end up being an ok deal depending on what else this helps set up.

Because he is a UFA and the season is over.

Its funny reading people talk about the cap space saved...remember, we still have the same guy who signed the 3rd liner to that money!

Wasn't Vermette coming off a 27 goal, 65 point season when he signed that contract? That's not exactly "getting fooled", more like "player trying to make money."

Yeah, and Vermette had also just scored like 65 points the season he got the extension so whats your point? Vermette was one of the few guys Howson didn't overpay at the time, obviously it isn't like that now, but at the time it was a good contract imo.

I'm not concerned with dumping salary. In case folks forgot, we've got $13 million in salary we're trying to trade.

I'm concerned with what we're going to put on the ice next season in the way of a team and neither a 2nd round pick nor a 5th round pick are likely to contribute to that without being moved in a subsequent deal.

As such, I honestly don't have an opinion on this deal. In and of itself, it is deck chairs on the Titanic.

That pretty well sums it up, except now a 30 year old deck chair won't be blocking Ryan Johansen from playing.

I understand the salary dump, and a 2nd is probably market value for Vermy.

But here is the thing. Do we really trust Howson and Priest to right the ship in one summer, when they have had 5 YEARS to do it!??

As for the dumping of salary and more cap space .. . . . . . . . Dont forget, this is the same guy who signed Pahlsson to a 2.65 million dollar deal for 4 years . . . .

Im not convinced that money will be spent wisely.

I am really surprised we couldn't get a first. Kind of in disbelief to be honest.

Whatever I guess.

If Patrick is really helping, I think they could do it, yes.

Did we trade Todd Richards too? I think that's the deck chair keeping RyJo out of the lineup.

Wait... are you telling me that we're sellers?!?!?

Seriously, though, I would've wished to have gotten a 1st or REAL roster player for him, but given his performance this year (and last) I'm not surprised at the return.

Good luck in Phoenix Vermy! I'll never forget the goal that had him winding up into a slapper right after he got traded here. His whole body was like a pretzal. It was a thing of beauty.

We traded an injured goalie and a second for Vermette, gave him a bad contract, and got back a 2nd, 5th, and a backup goalie.

It may not be the return some of you expected, but I still think we came out ahead.

I think most of you are delusional-here was a guy who everyone *****ed about this year while he was playing for a 30th place team. I think a 2nd is not bad for Vermette. I can't wait to hear the comments when Nash & Carter go. And not that it matters much but it does free up some cap space and gets rid of three more years of his contract.

If you take just the UFA contracts + Carter + Nash + Vermette = 29.3mill.

I think next year we're either going to have Weber on our blueline, or will be close to the cap floor.

it isn't a good return
it isn't an awful return
it makes me wary about our next trades if that was his best offer for vermette
