Vermette has sucked for the past 2 seasons. I do find it amusing how much he is overvalued on the mains while Nash and Carter are only worth scraps and prospects. I'll hold my judgement until everything else is done. With Vermette gone I'm hoping Carter will be staying.
It's sad that's all that the Jackets can get for Vermette, but that reflects his play the past 2 years.
I wonder why Howson pulled the trigger now when possibly at the deadline, teams might get more desperate. It's not like McElhinney can play this season. He might just be part of the deal to get rid of a contract on Phoenix's part.

I'll wager that 3 of our centers from the beginning of the season will be gone before the deadline.
I sincerely hope that Mackenzie is getting re-signed after its all said and done and that a center is acquired in one of the Nash/Carter deals. And, please, not Brandon Dubinsky.
Oh wait, Howson did it? Then we must have been screwed.
Seriously, Vermette hasn't been very good for a while. I'll be OK without seeing his blind passes in the defensive zone. That $3.75M can be wasted elsewhere.

I was hoping for a 2nd for Vermette. We got that and then some.
I'm guessing it was really tough dealing him with that cap hit. He certainly has not earned that contract this year and now PHX has to pay him for 3 more years. No way anyone was going to part with a 1st or a top prospect for Vermette.
I'm also guessing Howson needed an additional 2nd rounder to make another deal. If not, why not wait a few more days to trade Vermette.

IDK. We basically got back what we traded him for. We gave Ottawa a 2nd and Leclaire...got back a 2nd, 4/5th, and McElhinney. I really don't see any difference other than we are getting a potential 4th rounder back. Not horrible.
3.75 is too much for 3rd liner. Vermette had to be traded and I was printing that in the other thread at the moment the trade was announced. A week ago when I was looking for the Jackets record with Carter in the lineup Portzline tweeted that 5 minutes before I was done...
Now I gotta think what I better wish or think about this team next time.
lol @ whoever said we will have Weber on our Blue Line.
LOL at your reading comprehension. I never said we would have him on our blueline. I said we'd have him on the blueline or be a cap floor team. See?
My suggestion is that Howson is clearing cap space in an "all in" push to get Weber with the idea that if/when Weber goes elsewhere, he's content to have us at the floor, play a metric ****ton of rookies, ELC players and value-contract role players picked up in the off-season and pick 1 or 2 again in 2013.
Oh wait, Howson did it? Then we must have been screwed.
It's getting old all ready and we are just getting started. Howson could sign Weber for 5 years 1 mill per but it would be a bad deal because Howson made it.

McIlhinney isn't any better than what they already have. So just count the trade as a 2nd and 5th. McElhinney will have no impact here, maybe in Springfield.
Wasn't Vermette coming off a 27 goal, 65 point season when he signed that contract? That's not exactly "getting fooled", more like "player trying to make money."
Agreed. Hindsight is always 20/20, but at the time, it was a sound signing. Unfortunately it didn't pan out well for us, but it's not like he threw money at someone who didn't deserve it to begin with.

I still just don't understand the disbelief. Steve Downie got a very low first, he's signed at like half of what Vermette is making, played great in the playoffs and he is only 24 years old. If you think Vermette was getting a 1st, that is just utterly insane. Prospal was at best worth a late 1st and you think Vermette is worth more than Prospal?

I think a lot of people are missing this. Vermette was having a bad year the year we traded for him as well, but he was signed for another year at a good cap hit.
Now, he had a bad year last year, a much worse year this year, and is signed for three more years at a horrible cap hit for what he brings.
People need to read previous posts. McIlhinney is injured and won't ever play for the Jackets, he was just added to the trade because the Yotes had to dump a contract
I understand the salary dump, and a 2nd is probably market value for Vermy.
But here is the thing. Do we really trust Howson and Priest to right the ship in one summer, when they have had 5 YEARS to do it!??
As for the dumping of salary and more cap space .. . . . . . . . Dont forget, this is the same guy who signed Pahlsson to a 2.65 million dollar deal for 4 years . . . .
Im not convinced that money will be spent wisely.
Well obviously not many of us want Howson to be the one running the ship, but that isn't going to change and doesn't have much to do with the value of this trade, because frankly the value is there. If Howson can continue to get equal value on his trades I'm fine with him dealing at the deadline, just don't let him offer any contract extensions or else we might see Dorsett making 3 million next season.
