Stastny vs Roy

(I'd like for Buffalo/Colorado fans to withhold since their bias is well documented)

Roy
28 yrs old
previous 6 seasons stats :
408 games
130 goals
222 assists
352 pts
signed for only 1 more year, but at a below market cap of 4.0

Stastny
26 yrs old
previous 6 seasons
405 games
119 goals
239 assists
358 pts
signed for 2 more years, but at an above market cap of 6.6 per

are these 2 players very good comparables in terms of both their skill sets/production, as well as trade value when you take into account all things (production, position, age, cap hit, contract years)?

I'd say they're comparable, and that's why I don't want Stastny .

Stastny is harder working, better defensively, handles physical play better and is much better in the faceoff circle.

Good job not counting Roys first two years though. Can't introduce bias here.

In terms of a player trade, Roy is a downgrade and would have to be accompanied by a sizable asset to even consider it. If Buffalo isn't interested then that's fine. The idea of Roy on the Avalanche is extremely underwhelming.

I think Stastny's face off prowess is really overlooked. He is fourth in the league in face off winning percentage in terms of the players with the most face offs taken in the league.

Only Toews, Bergeron, and Datsyuk have a higher winning percentage than Stastny's 55%+ percentage.

He is one of the best face off guys in the league.

harder working, defense, and "handles physical play better" is subject to bias...

Stastny averages ~ 52% for his career on faceoffs
Roy averages ~50% for his career on faceoffs

we can look at scoring over the last 4 seasons instead?

Roy came into the league that 1st season and a half behind Briere, Drury, Connolly... where as Stastny came right into a top 6 role.

I thought the looking at the last 6 years was fair. we can change it to the last 4 years if you look... since we are comparing trade value IN THE PRESENT

So with respect to face offs, we should look at their entire careers, but with respect to points we are only supposed to look at selective years?

I would say that is a nice "logical" approach.

The thread is not meant as a comparison of swapping the two players between buffalo and colorado (that would be pointless).

for example:
if,
Vermette is worth X in trade value
Roy is worth Y in trade value
Getzlaf is worth Z in trade value
then,
Stastny is worth Y in trade value

Maybe that is a stupid way of framing what I am trying to say///

when it comes to comparing [the trade value of ] top 6 centers... i think Roy v Stastny is as close as it gets when not comparing elite #1 centers, or unproven high end prospects....

If we disregard any possible transaction involving the two then I think when it comes to purely hockey play Stastny is clearly better than Roy, but due to contractual considerations their values are close.

Stastny is better at faceoffs...

it's not selective to look at 6 straight years...

Stastny easily. His cap hit might scare off a few teams but at least he can pass as a first line center whereas Roy can't. The defense/size/age differences are definitely notable.

Roy has been unquestionably the better point producer at ES over the last four seasons. Stastny has a bit of an advantage in PP scoring, but that'd be negated if he came to Buffalo and played in the Lindy Ruff Standaround. Stastny may be the better defensive player, but I think many get a tad carried away when they talk about his defense. The guy isn't playing Selke-caliber defense.

I think Roy's the better value, especially for a cap team like Buffalo. Stastny probably has more value to the Avs because they have no cap concerns. But for Buffalo, I'd rather have Roy and the $2.6m in cap space to allocate elsewhere.

Good story? Roy scored twice against Pittsburgh on Sunday. What's your point?

I'm not going to even comment since I know how the last thread turned out... But Jame. You asked Buffalo/Colorado fans not to comment. Yet you are commenting? We all know your a Sabres fan. Stick to what you said. Don't start replying to the first people that post since they did not say what you wanted. Please keep your bias out of this.

Thank you!! This is what I was telling Jame in the other thread. But apparently an unbiased fan, according to him, would say Stastny and Roy are equal. Since your a Canuck fan I think your pretty unbiased.

It's turning into a pissing contest anyways. I think the OP is spot on. Anyone claiming bias, is being biased. You pointed out there numbers over the past 6 years, and it's pretty clear, what more do you want? He's talking about trade value. Logically, put the shoe on the other foot, and Roy scored 80pts his rookie year. Teams would say it's irrelevant, it happened 8 years ago!

I'm actually a fan of both teams, born in Buffalo, Living in Denver but good job jumping to conclusions. Their trade value is roughly the same and neither are top tier #1 centers.
