It's not speculation that Lydman and Markov were traded for 3rd rounders. Calgary (Lydman) should at least have been a team we could have talked to. Who knows if Gainey knew he was available or not, but isn't that kind of the point? Isn't that kind of his job? His availability was certainly widely aired on these boards before the trade, so I don't think it was any great secret.

We don't know witch players he try to get , we don't know if he was knowing that Markov was to be trade for nothing . It 's simple to say that he didn't sign this and these players , but how do you know he didn't try to ?
We don't know what he tried and failed at, no, but we do know what he succeeded at: Dandenault for $1.7+M/4yrs. That alone is the whole point of the criticism in this thread. Sure, it's entirely possible that he tried to sign every other significant free agent defenseman, offered them all more than they got from other teams, but everybody just hates Montreal. It's possible, and I've never denied it. But that isn't really the point of this thread, nor did I even mention it in my post.

Agreed, he could be... as long as he's healthy. But definitely not for the contract he has. Acquiring him wouldn't hurt us on the ice at all in the present, of course, but it would cripple us in terms of being able to sign anybody more significant in the summer. Hence my comment that it would just compound our problems.

Guys, forget Lydman, Gonchar, D. Markov, Aucion etc, they're old and are not going to do anything for this team. We need to rebuild our d and we need to do it with young guys.

I am now willing to trade Koivu. Nashville has three great young d-man and a need for a number one centreman. Koivu would be a perfect fit in Nashville. I definitely would think about trading him if we can get either Shea Weber or Ryan Suter, both are very, very close to being ready for the NHL.

Thrashers also have a host of young d-men, but they could use help and experience on d now. If we send Craig Rivet along with another player maybe we can pry Braydon Cobourn out of Atlanta?

Our d is terrible. Dandenault, Bouillon, Streit and Komisarek are #5 or #6 defencemen. Rivet and Souray are both 3s. Markov is our best d-man.

We keep him and Souray, hope a Suter or a Cobourn can become #2 and #4 d-man and fill out the squad with the rest of the guys.

It leaves us short a centreman, but the way this team is playing we may have a chance to draft either Toeves or Jordan Staal.

In any case, the time to rebuild is now. We aren't going anywhere with this team.

Interesting post. My problem is that I don't want to give up on the playoffs yet and if we still have some hope they is'nt any guys who have fair value that we can give.

What would this team be right now without Saku and Rivet

Edit: forget about Suter sorry we have no chance to get him

I'm agree with you. For one time, I think we should put this team on the rebuilt mode and accept to have a bad season. The leader of this team are the same this last 8 years and we go anywere with them. I think that we should try to make a package deal with Minnessota to change Koivu vs Gaborik. We need to build on better asset.

It's bad that we have the 5th overall pick last years ans not this years because there's a lot of good center that we need to lead this team. Chipchura will give us the leadership we need but he's not a first line center. Staal, Toews, Kessel, Mueller, Backstrom have good potentiel. We need change, this team need leadership and caracter in a fast time.
