He can go on a tear for 2-3 years and still make that contract look bad. 10 years is a very long time.
It's funny how this wasn't a problem for anyone 6 months ago. Even when Carter was traded people criticized philly for moving a good goal scorer on a good contract.

It's amazing how people's perceptions change.
I always thought those lifetime deals were terrible.

Still, Another big center is dealt. And Mtl doesnt even seemed to have inquired.
We always trade our talented player. And we never get a talented player back. Why?
Well, it's the equivalent of giving up PK and our 1st. I wouldn't make that deal.
In order to acquire that top line centerman you need to either overpay through free agency, draft one, trade for a guy who looks like a bust, but has potential (Turris) and then hope to luck out, or pay through the nose via a trade.
That pick is closer to our 2nd round pick as far as value is concerned and JJ is completely overrated. Great move by the Kings. Carter is the kind of guy who wants to be in a big market. He will do well there.
People here always think the "price is too steep" for us to acquire talent. Just read the threads and you would think people thought we would need to give PK, Pleks, Tinordi, Beaulieu, our 1st and 2nd picks to get Carter.
CBJ looks really bad here when you think about what they gave up last summer.
Nop, but I would have trade Diaz + 1st for Carter.
And thats exactly what they got.
Jack Johnson is one of the worst (career) in +/- in the entire NHL. He is -90 in last couple of years in LA.
A real pylon. And LA's 1st = 20ish.
Diaz, will get you 10-15 pts less than Johnson. Still average 18.33mins a game.
Difference is, MTL's 1st = Lottery.
Subban by himself worth more than Carter. So your example is ****. And you add Plekanec whos value is almost equal to Carter's.
Well according to this board (often using +/- as their argument), Plekanec sucks and is worth a late 1st or less. Jack Johnson might be a poor defender but he has a good reputation while Diaz is an unknown.
And if we are heading to the bottom 5 I'm not sure I'd trade our 1st for Carter. Galchenyuk and Forsberg have Carter+ upside.

Thing is CBJ was not going to get back what they traded. They were going to take a loss. Carter was unhappy and everyone knew he was going to get moved. Howson didn't have any leverage which brings me back to why I'm so disgusted with Habs brass. They trade players when they're at their absolute lowest value and end up getting crap in return.
I guarantee Howson would ask for PK and a 1st for Carter.
He can ask whatever he wants. He just got much less than what you propose.
Our pick will be top 10 or top 5. After 8-10th overall, it's just luck if you get a Carter-caliber player. Like I said, Kings pick is same value as our 2nd this year.
Not that I care for Nash and Carter but that just shows the price teams pay for top talent is often less than the speculation on this board. Our top brass sucks and we are never really in the race for those players.
