If guys like Ruutu, Huselius and Leino can get 4.75, 5 million for Hemsky sounds right.

I actually would like this deal if it happened. Let Hemsky prove that he can stay healthy and be a effective player. He would be heard to replace in the top-6, plus his teamates love him. I bet you next year if the Oilers are in a playoff push, you will see Hemsky back at close to point per game. I know that sounds bad, but he is a guy who needs the team to succeed in order for him to as well

I'm glad my team will not have him for 5 Mil for the next two years, but sadly he is worth more than Ruuto, and that is setting this up. He would have likely recieved this kind of cash on the open market as well.

Is he any worse off than say Marty Havlat when it comes to injuries.

Marty Havlat got 5. for a lot longer than Hemsky and they're both talented players.

Add in the fact that the cap has increased between when Havlat signed the deal and now, and you have a pretty fair offer for Hemsky.

Wow 5 mil. per for 2 years. That's almost as crazy as if some team paid Tim Connolly 4.5 mil. Per for 2 years.

Oh wait.

2 years is a good length, but 5 mill a season for a guy who has scored 5 goals this year??? He should take that money and run.

So Hemsky is now going to be making almost as much as Phil Kessel who is top 3 in scoring and top 3 in goals and is 24.

lol Oilers

The Oilers have a massive hole on the RW with Hemsky gone. The amount is irrelevant--they have tons of cap space. What matters is the term. Hemsky at 5M for 2 years is better than Hemsky at 4 million for 5 years. If he gets hurt or otherwise does not work out, they can ship him out with only 1 year left on his contract. They won't be able to do it so easily when he's on contract for 4 more years.

He has. He wants 4 years at $5 million/year. He initially wanted 5 years, but came down to 4.

You know it's a bad contract when you have to justify it against contracts like Leino, Connolly and Ruttu.

Why not compare it to contracts like Sharp, Burrows, Pavelski and Clutterbuck?

Its better than losing him for nothing. I like this for the Oilers since they have the money and cap space anyways. RNH's contract will be up when this deal ends.

You probably don't understand the difference between RFAs and UFAs as well as the relationship between salary and term.

This is a UFA market where Ruutu gets 4.75, Connolly gets 4.75, Leino gets 4.5 and Fleischmann gets 4.5. $5 million for Hemsky on a 2 year term is a fair deal.

If Hemsky gets 5 mill, how much will Hall and Eberle want when they become RFA's? 8 mill 10 mill? #settingabadexample

He wants to stay, his teammates love him, and he's a fan favourite. He's had one bad year in his career (this year) but he's been a lot better recently. That shouldn't surprise anyone, he's coming off two serious injuries.

Hemsky has world class talent. His injury history is a concern but that's a risk you have to take. When he plays, he usually produces (.92ppg since the lockout excluding this season).

Are we to assume all of his talent is gone? Are the people criticizing the contract even aware of what other players around the league have already gotten?

If Ruutu can get 4.75 long term, 5 for Hemsky at short term is fair.

No. That's terrible logic.

'These horrible contracts get 5 mill, let's hand one out too'

5 million isn't the average for a Hemsky player.

I like how you forget to mention Kesler who also signed at 5 mill last year. You only mention bad teams who gave out bad contracts.

As an Oilers fan, I'd be fine with a 1 or 2 year deal worth $5M.
