The "core theory" is correct and has been discussed on here for years. Except the "sniper" is not a part of it, and hasn't been a part of the last handful of cup winners.
Nash is a power forward that can score goals by driving the net. Cole, Iggy etc...
Snipers need their centerman to set them up, and are more perimeter players and excel on the PP. Semin, Cammallerri, Parise, Kovy, Stamkos, Sharp, Vanek, etc... these guys are dangerous since they don't need much space to fire off a shot and score.
I think you might be just a little dramatic here. The kid makes alot of mistakes but is pretty promising on a ****** team. His + - is inflated by alot of offensive zone starts. You are right though. Its just so hard to define a young shutdown D prospect.

He is the softest ****ing player on the Sabres. 12 hits in 44 games. And his decision making with the puck is awful.
His numbers look nice on paper (1g 10a 11p +12)
But he is FRUSTRATING AS ****. If you think JJ is frustrating. Forget it, Grags will make you put your fist through a wall.
For those who possess difficulty reading between the lines, I'll spell it out for you: Jack Johnson is expendable!!!
1 – Goalie (Quick) Rating : 1
2 - Big ShutDown D (Mitchell) Rating : 2
3 - PP QB D (Doughty) Rating : 1
4 – Big First Line Center (Kopitar) Rating : 1
5 - Shutdown Centerman (Richards) Rating : 2 or 1
6 - Power Forward (Brown) Rating : 3
7 – Sniper (Carter) Rating : 2 or 1
I take it Carter fulfills the sniper role?
If the idea is to constantly be looking to improve the 7 positions, shouldn't we be looking at a deal centered around Bernier for Landeskog? That might put us over the top......

Why in ****s name would Colorado consider that? They just spent a first on Varlamov...

Did you not witness the beautiful spectacle that was the Avs/Kings pre-game show consisting of uber intelligent commentators Jeremy Roenick and Mike Milbury? Apparently, "Varlamov is garbage".
I think it's safe to say Landeskog is almost untouchable unless the Kings part with some A valued players like Kopitar or Doughty. Yes that seems ridiculous but anyone with a brain can see how good Landeskog seems to be. If the Kings had someone like him they wouldn't move him either.

Kopitar for Stastny and Landeskog? (Or Duchene )
Who knows what the hell is up with this team right now.
Just need the 1 power forward. And, a real shut-down centerman. I would put Richards as more of a 1st/2nd line center, who is great defensively. It would be nice to have a 3rd or 4th line that could be a shut-down line.

Not enough of us appreciated the Frolov/Handzus/Simmonds line when we had the chance.
I disagree. There is no way we are upgrading our 1A center nor will we for many years. Kopitar can match up against any 1A center in this league, and put up 70-80 pts on one of the lowest scoring teams in the NHL. There are teams out there that only dream to have that kind of player on their team. Giving him a rating of 1 means we are set at that postion and I am glad we have him.
Richards, who better to have on the ice with 30 secs left and a 1 goal lead. You are not going to find a better leader and competitor with the on ice vision he has. How will you upgrade that position. We are set for the shutdown role for years.
I was under the impression that your ratings were in comparison to players on other teams as well. Based on that, imo Kopitar is not a 1. Crosby, Malkin, Datsyuk, etc.. those are 1s.
Richards could be a top shut down center, but I don't think he's been that in LA yet.

You and others were correct about Johnson. I agree with the idea of replacing Brown.
The rub is fulfilling expectations - the ratings. Quick and Mitchell are the only two excelling. Richards has been ok, Carter should be ok, Doughty isn't quite there yet, Kopitar is going to be joining Johnson and possibly Brown on the outs if he doesn't make a dramatic improvement soon.
Ironically, Quick and Mitchell are up for new contracts, Doughty, Carter and Johnson have recently signed long deals and Kopitar and Brown seemed to be very well established. Growing pains are not to be unexpected and a retooloing is just part of the process.
