Speculation is if he clears, he'll be placed back in Hartford. Calgary, expressed interest a month ago according to Kypreos, and possibly San Jose, player said he wants team to get Avery, are rumored to have interest.

Avery Possibly on Re-Entry Tomorrow

Makes sense, needs to be on an NHL roster by 3pm Monday if the claiming team wants him in the post-season.

Not sure who would claim a guy who hasn't played since 1/27 though...

http://www.nypost.com/p/blogs/slapsh...QQ1pjeZgLA1AzK

Quote:
With the NHL trade deadline Monday at 3 p.m., and the weekend waiver period lasting for 48 hours, the Rangers would thus have to make their decision regarding Avery no later than Saturday morning so he would be eligible for claim by noon Monday.

If Avery is claimed on re-entry, the Rangers would be hit with a $209,460 salary cap charge for the remainder of the season. If Avery were to go unclaimed, the Rangers would simply put him back on waivers and re-assign him to the AHL Whale after he clears.
EDIT - Beaten to the punch, mod delete please

There's a 1% chance he's back with the team.

I'll hope for it.

Could there be a trade? The Rangers had 2 scouts in Calgary last night

Sounds good, so long as we don't reacquire Jokinen.

Believe there was a rumor on the Trade Rumors board that a SJ player was lobbying for Wilson and McLellan to trade for Avery, but they were not convinced.

If this is re-entry then why exactly would Calgary need to trade for Avery?

Jokinen has been Flames best player arguably the last few weeks. But yes, understand the sentiment...that SO attempt was one of the weakest efforts I have ever seen.

I'm unsure why anyone would bother trading for him when he would have to clear re-entry waivers before hand anyways... Giving up assets and more money (at this point, cap hit doesn't matter).

I mean, I guess they can do a "Here's player X for future considerations" as a thank you for putting him on re-entrys but am not sure if thats even allowed...

aren't we on the hook for half (of half) of his salary if someone claims him? i know it's not a lot of money (~1M prorated for the final 1/4 of the season) but what's the point? i can't imagine him suiting up for the Rangers. it could very well cost us 300k in cap space.

Does the same apply for zuccarello too?

That he had to be on the NHL roster for any club to use him in the remaining games of the regular season?

So if zuke's not brought up by this week he's stuck in the AHL?

You're already on the hook for half of his salary so you're actually saving money if someone claims him. He still gets paid his NHL contract in Hartford.

And the cap space at this point is completely irrelevant.. Pro-rated, its not going to affect any other moves you guys want to make and it disappears at the end of the season regardless.

Yep. This is a move to help Avery, it seems. Only about ~$200K in cap space will the Rangers be on the hook for.

I couldn't care less what the team is paying him...I only care what his cap hit is. Right now he's counting 0 towards the cap...if claimed he will count about 300k towards it. Once again, not a big deal by any stretch...but what's the point? Did the organization do an about face on Avery yet again?

Don't think it's the same situation because Zuccarello doesn't have to clear re-entry waivers if he's called up.

Let Calgary take the risk of recalling Avery on re-entry.

Brooks did report last month,Sather had offered to make a minor league deal with the acquiring team taking the risk of losing Avery on re-entry.

Avery has been a nuisance and distraction to everyone in Hartford. When was the last time he played a game?

So the Rangers reward Avery by taking a cap hit so he can play for another team?

What we actually owe him is irrelevant to our ownership. Jim Dolan has no reservations with paying buyout cash or money for guys to rot in Hartford. He counts nothing against the cap now, whereas he'd count about 200k against the cap if he's claimed on reentry.

If this is done, it's as a favor to Avery. It doesn't make sense any other way.

The 300k is completely irrelevant. You have over 7 million in space and any trade for someone near that cap hit (i.e. Nash) will have salary (i.e. Dubinsky) going the other way anyways. The Rangers will finish the season with unused cap space no matter what happens these next few days.

At this point, Avery in the AHL or Avery on another team is the same exact thing for the Rangers.

If they can gain good favor with another GM/team for free, why not?
