Trade Block: Available Capitals

Jason Arnott(A) C 100.00 58 48 85 77 86 83 74 75 84 74 75 67 74 84 87 24 71

Alexei Ponikarovsky LW RW 100.00 75 53 77 80 86 78 79 72 35 73 69 70 50 72 70 66 70

Roman Hamrlik(C) D 100.00 64 50 83 74 83 92 87 68 35 71 61 74 50 93 91 21 72

Jaroslav Spacek D 100.00 65 49 85 82 77 89 81 64 35 68 55 74 50 84 89 29 71

Price for these players being prospects, young roster players, or picks in some cases. Arnott is scoring over a point per game in the sim this year, so he would be a fantastic 2nd or 3rd line pickup for a team that is challenging for the cup, but admittedly his price may be a bit higher due to him having value to my squad for next season.

Rumor has it that Calgary and Washington have come to an agreement that would see prospect Dmitri Orlov and NHL defender Jamie McBain become Flames property. In exchange, a trio of prospects from Calgary will come to Washington as the Capitals attempt to further bolster their system with valuable depth.

The rumor has been confirmed that joining the Washington Capitals will be prospects Duncan Siemens, Matt Puempel, and Scott Wedgewood in exchange for Dmitry Orlov and Jamie McBain. Washington feels they have added some diversity to their prospect pool by adding two former first round picks and a WJC goaltender at a position of organizational weakness.

This is an interesting trade well u get some good prospects all 3 of them are probably a few years away from the NHL though i may be wrong. In exchange for two young NHL ready Dman

Well here is my outlook on the situation. Both defenders that I traded were SE division players that I have seen extensively. Especially Jamie McBain.

With McBain, he was a healthy extra during the early part of the season due to a really poor preseason. He has settled into a much better form, but as the defense for Carolina gets better he may find himself on a depth chart free fall. Brian Dumoulin and Ryan Murphy are on the way here. There are a whole slew of others that should compete like Danny Biega, Mark Alt, Austin Levi, Michal Jordan, etc. He's not a Top 4 defender on any contending team and he's about to turn 24. While not ancient, I have not seen enough progression in his game to feel like I am losing a potential star here. He will be a solid 30 point guy for some time in my estimation. His defensive game may have actually regressed some since his debut season.

With Orlov, this is the gamble. The harder player to move beyond a shadow of a doubt. I think he has the skills to be quite a player. The only things that made doubt creep into my mind was the diminishing number of Russian defenders in the NHL, and Russian players in general, as the KHL becomes somewhat more viable or at least competes in terms of promised money. Take Radulov for example or worst case scenario. Secondly, Orlov was not as immediately viable offensively as I was hoping. His bread and butter will never be defense. He throws occasional hits, but he's not overtly physical. If his offensive game flatlines at the NHL level then his value does as well in my estimation. They're sending him through the growing pains this season, but who knows if or when he takes that major next step.

With the players that I picked up in return in Puempel and Siemens, I "bought low", due to both having concussion trouble this season. Wedgewood is an outlier and a player that I hope will contribute as a prospect down the line, but he was a minor player in this deal. Siemens, should he pan out properly, has the upside to be the best player in this deal because he plays a more complete game. It's very true he's further away from the NHL but I am in no major rush as I continue to bolster the system. Peumpel is a guy that I was interested in at the draft but assumed him to be out of my reach. I was correct as he was taken 19th. While he too has had a tough season, he may have been the most natural goal scorer available last season towards the end of the draft. I will take a chance on a guy like that all day long.

McBain wasn't really a target because, like Josh said, he'd seemed to have taken a step back. But as you know I went to the Canes/Ducks game a few weeks ago with Tony and McBain was simply great. And at around this time he also started playing the most minutes of the entire Canes D. What I saw that night and have seen since is a pretty dynamic player who can handle the puck well, makes smart decisions with the puck and had obviously improved tremendously this year.

He could fit in well in my bottom pairing now - and while Josh thinks 23 is old - I see 23 as the age when defenseman only START learning their trade in the NHL. Despite the influx of younger dmen into the NHL in the last few seasons, they're all pretty much erratic and inconsistent until they hit that mid 20's point and don't even become consistently well rated until much later... 27 or 28. So Jamie has a few years to continue to improve. I'm also not worried about the upcoming dmen. There are vets on this roster who will be cleared away and as this young team improves - McBain should be along for the ride... I don't see why he can't score 40 points on a regular basis (assisting on many a Skinner goal!)

But he wants to play in the NHL. He's 20 and is noted as being an offensive dman but this season has made and stayed in the NHL because of his vast improvement in his own zone. The Caps are holding the reigns on him. Developing him properly. He is a physical player when needed, he has all the tools, but unlike a Siemens, this kid is hockey smart in a different way - and to me this is the kind of player that always seems to succeed. I've said I think this kid is the next Zubov, I'll take even a pale imitation (which I think Orlov is not....)

Trading Hejduk/ Wolksi for them and then flipping them for prospects I did like was always the plan. A round-about way to get a Hejduk/Wolski for McBain/Orlov trade ..(*though at the time I didn't know they were who I would end up with but were on my list of targets - and there were other assets like Galiev that I got for the same vets.)

I think Siemens is a classic "has all the tools" but doesn't put it all together. He is just all raw talent. And I didn't trade him because of his concussion but just generally because he's played, well, like **** all year and I didn't like him in the first place. Others however, like actual real NHL GM's actually love this guy, he was taken 11th overall. What do I know? But even if he does reach his potential he's 4 or 5 years away in my estimation. McBain is a year or two. Orlov two or three. That timeline worked better for me.

Puempel is a guy I drafted when my list of players I wanted at 19 were gone and he was the BPA. I tried, in vain, to drop down in the draft but decided the next level of prospects were not that good. I feel like it was a failed draft - I played it wrong. Puempel is, as one or two people who scout the OHL tell me, a natural goalscorer but he is a 'complimentary' player on any line. Unlike someone like Skinner who can generate his own chances, Puempel is not that type. Which is fine, but I really feel like Orlov has higher upside, plus he's already in the NHL and starting to make an impact, who knows if Puempel will even get this far. And the OHL guys I talked too really don't like Puempel. And they know more than me.

Wedgewood - I just find it hard to recompense that this guy isn't the full time starter. And the guy he's competing with isn't even considered an NHL prospect. He was the bait that put the trade over the top. I certainly don't know what his future is like, but I like my goalie prospect crop more, and to get this trade done he was a necessary piece.

I traded three prospects I didn't like that much for two guys I'm excited about. Plus, two of the prospects I gave up were acquired for veterans whose value was pretty low on the market.

Good trade for both teams - met the needs and I'm rebuilding on a quicker timetable than Josh who can wait for these three to develop. And we have different perspectives on the players. All in all only time will settle this deal.

That's it I'm quitting. I don't like any of these trades. I like Alvarro and Doug arguing but not these trades. I don't approve of any teams getting better.

Just kidding

I am giving away all my star players to Alvaro so he can win the division
I guess I should kiss the division goodbye

The Washington Capitals have immediately flipped prospect Matt Puempel to the St. Louis Blues in exchange for Russian scorer Alexander Khoklachev. We feel that his skill set and position better reflects our organizational needs at the moment.

Interesting. I rather suspect Nick has had his fill of talented-but-enigmatic Russian prospects. Hope you have better luck than he has...

The thing most encouraging about this one is his willingness to play in North America, even after falling due to the Russian Factor, and the fact that he missed out on being eligible for this draft by mere days as the youngest player in the 2011 Draft. In addition to that, him playing a big role in the Russian WJC team as an 18 year old was highly impressive. I know we're not talking about the same level of talent, but he's only a month older than Yakupov.

Plus, the positive of the double edge sword of Russian prospects is that they usually get their chance far earlier in the NHL by virtue of teams being scared to let them rot in the minors. He has top end skill level and some creative skating despite a lack of top end speed.

With the lack of boom or bust guys in my system, I figured it would be worth a shot. I see his upside as significant.
