Our offense is above average maybe, but we're relying quite heavily on 2 lines- and in the playoffs that could be a recipe for disaster.
In the month of February, this team scored 31 goals all together- only FOUR were by lines 3 and 4. The rest were by Step/Artie/Gabby or Hags/Richards/Cally with a few by DZ, McD, and Staal.
So while maybe Rick Nash wasn't the answer, but it concerns me that the scoring isn't balanced enough.
What's the purpose of this thread? To illuminate that the team probably isn't good enough win a chamionship?
Every single cup winner since the lockout has had a top 10 offense. All but one have had top 5 offenses.
The Rangers are a SLIGHTLY above average offensive team. They'd be more comfortable if Brandon Dubinsky wasn't a confused, inconsistent, overpaid player.
The Rangers unquestionably need more offense. That doesn't mean it needs to come in the form of an overpaid Rick Nash, but it's going to have to come from somewhere.
Well said Sting. We need another offensive player.
I've said it before, I say it again. At even strength, our scoring is more than fine. In fact, we are the 4th best team in the league with a 1.31 ratio at ES. Only Detroit, St. Louis and Boston are better than us in that department.
The problem is - as always - our pathetic PP that has consistently parked in the bottom 5 in the league, basically every season since the lockout (well, perhaps Jagr made it look somewhat respectable during the 05/06 season). We are currently the 28th "best" team with a measly 14.4 PP%. Only 30 of our goals have been scored on the PP, which is really bad. Only Montreal and Phoenix are worse than us. Our desire for the cup will be decided by our PP. Teams will tighten down their defense and we have to capitalize on special teams to be successful.
So, in this case you can do nothing but . Just as every season. Every attempt at polishing our turd PP by bringing in PP specialists, or players that have a history of producing on the PP, has utterly failed.
Good post Chimp. The Rangers are tough to beat 5-on-5. They need to shore up their PP. Whether that means bringing in someone, or devising a new strategy, it has to get fixed before the playoffs.
The majority of teams that we're better than aren't going to be in the playoffs.
I agree. Previous playoff years have shown that scoring is tougher with the ramped up play. Powerplays are crucial.
McCabe was added last year for the powerplay and that didn't amount to anything. On the other hand, our defense is scoring more this season. Adding a powerplay forward would be nice. Nash's price got too high, but I don't really see our middle of the pack status as enough of a reason to stand pat.

Regardless of where we stand on an overall goals scored basis, the fact is this team can be shut down and or shut out alot easier than any other top 4 team in either conference.
The argument that we are in 12th overall in scoring means we shouldn't address it is poor.
Boy did you ever hit the nail squarely on the head.
We have one elite(if you will) goal scorer on the team(Gabby) and he would be relatively easy to shutdown in a playoff series against a big, physical team.
We only have two players with more than 20 goals and six players with more than 10 goals.
Our entire 3rd line has the astounding total of 14 goals!
The majority of the teams that end up in the playoffs will be much better than us offensively.
I agree, our offense is average at best and it needs to be addressed going forward.
So you're saying we need something extra for the playoffs. Man, I'm not sure where they could possibly find an advantageto make up for the goal scoring disparity?
Vancouver made it to the finals and were 14th in playoff offense. Big whoop. As long as you win, you win.
They were 14th in playoff offense after the finals, when they played a seven game series against the league's 2nd best defensive team. That was after they already played a seven game series against the 3rd best defensive team in the league.
The Canucks finished the regular season as the best offensive team in the league.

Stop talking about facts! DAMNIT, Sting!
