Not impressed right now. Just a gross deal from my perspective. This team didn't exactly have a lot of offense from the back-end as it stands.

Yeah unlike Gilbert who has been averaging the same or more. The minute eater bit is a total non issue.

I have to say, as an outsider, I REALLY like this deal for you guys. You won easily.

You really needed some defence-first guys on your blueline in the exact same mold of a guy like Nick Shcultz, the guy is crazy-underrated.

Good move, I really like it. Go get a long term goalie, and we'll see you guys in the playoffs soon.

just listening to Gilbert on sportsnet - he was shocked and had no idea he was in play.

Guess this is clearing room for our up and coming youngsters on the back end.

I'll keep this thread bookmarked for future reference.

Going to be interesting how many people change their mind when they notice 60% less turn overs, injuries and cowardice on the ice!

@awesomo:

Tom Gilbert has been averaging 22+ minutes a night for the past several years. He munches up more minutes.

Schultz is an elite Defensive Dman imo. It was a good trade for you guys! stay at home defensemen never get enough credit, but he will be more vital to your team as he can be put on the ice against any line.

This is for the 9th best GA team in the NHL and 9th best GA/G team in the NHL.
i liked gilbert a little more this season, but when the playoffs come, i want a guy that has a more physical game. nice to see gilbert is heading home.

Schultz is a defensive d-man with great mobility, and can eat up tons of minutes mistake free. As an outsider, I thought the Oilers would need a player like him.

Don't know how well Gilbert has been playing this year though...

I thought Schultz was a pretty solid dman? Surprised to see Gilbert go, didn't know he was on the block, but I don't hate this trade.

Gilbert's having a good year, if this trade happened last year I don't think so many people would be outraged.

Well, there goes our chance of luring Ryan Suter over to play with his former college D partner.

Surprising amount of respect for Schultz (players and media)...we'll have to wait and see.

Deep breathe everyone.

I really think some of you need to see Schultz play a few games. He's a great defensive player and he'll look great as a #4 guy here. I like Gilbert but we need an offensive defenceman WITH him here so it's not like things have changed.

Realistically, Edmonton really needs a top pairing minute eater who can play in all situations. Moving Gilbert to acquire Schultz doesn't really change that and I think it actually balances out our defence better IF we can get that guy (possibly Ryan Murray long-term?).

Shultz: GA/60: 2.00

Gilbert: GA/60: 2.71

Consider the difference in goaltenders too, but man what a shocker.

I bet Gibby is stoked to be going home. He was playing great this year and I'm sad to see him go. Hopefully something else goes down

Don't worry about the cowardice, Potter's got that covered in spades.

I have many mixed feelings about this trade. I feel Minny shouldve added but then again, I dont really watch Wild games so I dont know much about Schultz.

Im just upset that as soon as Glibert seemed to be coming around, we got rid of him.

Maybe Gilbert wanted to go home, he from Minnesota right? And Schultz's home isn't that far from EDM (thanks wiki).

Anyway, I don't see the reason for upset about this deal. Maybe Gilbert has a few upsides offensively that Schultz has not but overall it looks like a fair deal to me. - 500k in cap

Now they go for Rundblad and pair him with Schultz

I feel bad for Gibby, sounded pretty disappointed on Sportsnet. Kept reiterating its going to be tough leaving the young guys.

My personal take is that Shultz is really underrated. Just like Smid is underrated. They both can skate really well and make plays out of their own ends. The Oilers don't need guys that don't play hard in their own end and it was just a year ago we were all complaining about Gilbert's lack of physicality. Schultz is a durable hard to play against D man that eats up minutes. I think in the long term people will like this deal.
