This is terrible. Absolutely terrible. We trade one of our only top 4 defensemen?

Petry is our only good right handed dman now.

Well done Steve, one of your worst trades you've made so far.

Oh and this has to open the door for a Denis Wideman type signing.

Smid-Petry
Shultz-Wideman

I'm warming up to this. Tambo may have a plan...

This makes sense. Petry has been playing better than Gilbert offensively and Gilbert was basically playing in shut-down role for a while.

This makes our RD pretty weak beyond Petry. What's our lineup now?
Smid - Petry
Whitney - Potter
Schultz - Barker

Decent deal, don't think anyone wins or loses as both teams get what they need.

Better not take 55

that's Ulanov's number

Seriously though I like the trade, would love to see how both players pan out with their new teams though. Could be a big win win for both IMO

Edit: how do I forget Eager?? Haha guy's been a beast lately

Give this Schultz guy a chance, I have a weird feeling everyone will warm up to this guy big time.

Tough seeing Gibby go though.

Give it a rest. Smid and Gilbert were the most active D on the ice in the very physical recent game with the Flyers.

When you say something like coward it totally undermines whatever else you state.

Schultz is a reasonable stay at home D, but one who looks better for playing on a club that emphasizes team play and dedication in NZ and own zone.

Gilbert has a thinking mans approach to the game and could look even better on a team that plays a focused game.

Smid and Schultz give us two good, mobile shutdown guys now as well. Add in a Suter/Wideman etc. and we have a pretty balanced defensive core now. If Petry can keep progressing, we could end up pretty solid on the back-end.

Don't really like the deal, but it isn't the worst transaction Tambo has orchestrated. Better deal for the Wild than the Oilers, IMO, despite the way the crew on TSN raved about it.

I feel like everyone would be happy if we got a 4th back in the deal.

But what's a 4th, really? We save a little cap room and get a guy we covet. I'm liking it.

Sure can't be the way he was playing.

What? Gilbert has been playing like shyte since he got back from injury. Not saying that being out so long had something to do with it, but he was no where near he pre-injury form. Saying that, for all of those saying Tambo doesn't have the balls to make hockey deals, your wish has come true.

Bit of a shock but i think we are okay with this trade.

Petry's performance last month made Gilbert available.

Schultz was a Lemaire's favorite, so that says something about Schultz defensive ability and smartness.

Signing Hemsky, making trade like this to adjust dynamics of the lineup and positioning to get that true offensive d man later on, I think we are definitely in a new phase with our rebuild. Liking it.

Well if the goal is "balance"

Smid - Petry
Schultz - Whitney

Don't look too bad.

Strange that so many are against this deal. How many games have Oilers fans complained about Tom Gilbert? A ton!

Schultz is a solid stay-at-home D who the Oilers need moving forward. Just take a look at all the tweets about how the Wild players are upset by the departure of Schultz. That says a lot.
