I'm one of the very few Oiler fans that like this deal. Gilbert's the kind of player that plays his worst when the games mean something. The opposite of a playoff type of player and also pretty soft although he's taken strides this year in that regard. Schultz is dependable and has great leadership abilities. Tencer reporting that his Wild teammates are upset to see him go and he captained Canada at the WJC way back when, not to mention wearing an A in Minny. Solid second pairing guy and the only thing that bothers me is the loss of another righty.
Not crazy about this deal, but the Oilers do need a defensive guy and Schultz sounds like a good one when healthy. If Petry steps his game up and Schultz plays big ES minutes, it might make us a better bet for the second season next year. I just wish we could have done this WITHOUT giving up one of our only other top four defensemen. Kind of seems like running in place if we can't replace Gilbert's minutes.
Gilbert JUST emerged as a top pairing dman, this team desperately needs puck movers who can play defense, and we trade basically the only non-injury concern (albeit with a bit more trouble this year), veteran, puck-moving guy we have for another decent 2nd pairing guy who can't move the puck?!
I feel sick over the fact that Tambellini is overseeing this
Rebuild. Next we'll be trading Eberle for Oshie or something. Just BS.
I really think some of you need to see Schultz play a few games. He's a great defensive player and he'll look great as a #4 guy here. I like Gilbert but we need an offensive defenceman WITH him here so it's not like things have changed.
Realistically, Edmonton really needs a top pairing minute eater who can play in all situations. Moving Gilbert to acquire Schultz doesn't really change that and I think it actually balances out our defence better IF we can get that guy (possibly Ryan Murray long-term?).
I watch Minnesota play a fair amount. Some of how good Schultz would look on that club has to do with how Minny plays the game and goaltending. He clears traffic well.
Really in this deal we get a far less creative player, less of a PMD, but more physical. Plus that Gilberts physical play has steadily increased.
My preference is for the thinking player. Especially on a club emphasizing skill, transition, fast break.
