How do we get what we need?

I'm one of the very few Oiler fans that like this deal. Gilbert's the kind of player that plays his worst when the games mean something. The opposite of a playoff type of player and also pretty soft although he's taken strides this year in that regard. Schultz is dependable and has great leadership abilities. Tencer reporting that his Wild teammates are upset to see him go and he captained Canada at the WJC way back when, not to mention wearing an A in Minny. Solid second pairing guy and the only thing that bothers me is the loss of another righty.

Isn't Methot better than Schultz? And he could've been had for 2 and 1/2 lbs of Canadian Back Bacon. This better be a pre-cursor for something else or Tambellini's got some 'splainin to do.

Replacement; perhaps 'cowardice' was out of order on my end.

But I know Schutlz will stand up for any team mate without question and that he was loved by his peers in Minne.

I don't hate Gilbert. In fact, I warned up to him quite a bit. But in terms of team needs, Schutlz fits the bill ideally.

Ginny will do great in Minne but Schutlz is going to make a significant impact on ice for us.

I'm warming up to this. Tambo may have a plan...
When has Tambo ever had a plan? I'm not warming up to it. Obviously we need to see how Schultz plays for the remainder of the season, but at this point I am not impressed.

Corrected for you. Could be one of those trades that helps both teams.

Well I'll take my own advice and wait to see what other moves ST makes today and at the draft, but we lack guys that have offense on the back end. This does however shore up some defensive issues.

This move makes a lot of sense to me. Guys in the pipe are puck movers, not known as shutdown types. Marincin, Kelfbom, Petry...none of those are shutdown types.

Shultz will help to solidify a pretty weak defensive group

I'll reserve any judgement on Schultz until I see him play a few games.

Not crazy about this deal, but the Oilers do need a defensive guy and Schultz sounds like a good one when healthy. If Petry steps his game up and Schultz plays big ES minutes, it might make us a better bet for the second season next year. I just wish we could have done this WITHOUT giving up one of our only other top four defensemen. Kind of seems like running in place if we can't replace Gilbert's minutes.

Good deal. We need to keep the puck out of the net. This trade helps that

I don't see how anyone can't like this deal. We just improved our goals against.

The plan is to rely on signing one of the higher profile defenseman on the market? How can that realistically be a legitimate plan?

Our turnover rate just dropped like a stone.

Good riddance Gilbert. Go turn pucks over for Minny now.

Well my 'darkhorse' player to be traded actually came true anyway. I'm still not impressed. I guess we will see what we have with Schultz soon enough.

Just ruined my day.

Gilbert JUST emerged as a top pairing dman, this team desperately needs puck movers who can play defense, and we trade basically the only non-injury concern (albeit with a bit more trouble this year), veteran, puck-moving guy we have for another decent 2nd pairing guy who can't move the puck?!

I feel sick over the fact that Tambellini is overseeing this
Rebuild. Next we'll be trading Eberle for Oshie or something. Just BS.

What would you expect him to say? It's the same type of party line that you saw from Stauffer about Petry passing Gilbert on the depth chart.

It's all about being good employees to offer up the best spin possible...

Realistically, Edmonton really needs a top pairing minute eater who can play in all situations. Moving Gilbert to acquire Schultz doesn't really change that and I think it actually balances out our defence better IF we can get that guy (possibly Ryan Murray long-term?).
I watch Minnesota play a fair amount. Some of how good Schultz would look on that club has to do with how Minny plays the game and goaltending. He clears traffic well.

Really in this deal we get a far less creative player, less of a PMD, but more physical. Plus that Gilberts physical play has steadily increased.

My preference is for the thinking player. Especially on a club emphasizing skill, transition, fast break.

Outside of this season, everyone has been hating on Gilbert and his play. He's having a decent season so far this year but that sure as hell wasn't the case prior to this season.

Can't wait for the GDT when Schultz cost us a goal and we are hit with a wave of "SHULTZ YOUR DUNKOFF!"
