to bigwillie, no that is not what happened. Please let me know when Winnik and Galiardi hit as much and as hard as McGinn does. The Sharks just traded their one overly physical player. This team should just strike up a sponsorship with Tampax because it would be very effective advertising.
Really sad to see Ginner go. Really hope these new guys can help us out in the hitting and toughness area. With Murray out and now with Jamie gone, I feel like out team is a bunch of pansies.
markedwinemmons 12:25pm via Web Douglas Murray on Winnik and Galiardi: "It's two guys who you definitely get irritated playing against . . . and that's a compliment."
Does Galiardi do PK too? If so, this could be a major help. Once fully healthy, we'd have more PK'ers, which means less PK time for top 6 guys (especially Thornton and Marleau). Keeping those guys off the PK is a good thing, keeps them fresher for 5 on 5/PP.
Ambivalent about the trade. Winnik is a damn-fine player...exceptional PKer. However, he is a pending UFA.
Galiardi was a middling player on a worse team. Don't know what he can contribute here. He is very similar to Mcginn in his value; he's more "skilled" and is a great agitator, but Mcginn is much more punishing physically.
That is a prime concern. A third-line of Winnik-Moore-Galiardi is tough, skilled, adamantine in puck pursuit, and agitating, but it lacks finishing ability and physicality. Mcginn would have been good on that line. Though, Galiardi in particular does have the skills to be a second-line forward....we shall see.
I appreciate the overall sentiment regarding prospects. Sgarbossa, value-wise, had to be behind Nieto, Hamilton, Viedensky, etc. It is much more likely he is the next Ferriero than the next Setoguchi. But it always stings to give up some a prolific scorer (#2 in the OHL). Connolly has put up points, but he was never going to crack the top-6 and wasn't right for the bottom-six. He's very similar to Ferriero, except he's even smaller.
Nothing will stop the hircine depictions of DW for this, but ultimatley the success of these trades bears on SJ winning a cup this Spring, or DW resigning Winnik and Moore.
Uh... I'm a huge McGinn fan but you have to be a bit delusional not to think this trade is worth it
Thank goodness I'm not the only one. I've liked Winnik since PHO and Galardi seems to have a good deal of O upside. We loose some toughness and a great up-and-coming home grown talent but there is MUCH over reaction here.
I feel this trade may bite us one day. The Pirate is gone! Ginners is gone! and 210 is going to rage on us for taking a forward from the AHL in which we already are short on!

This is a decent deal. I loved McGinn, but the "fire DW" corps is delusional.
How is:
Winnik - Moore - Galiardi
Winchester - Handzus - Desjardins
with Mitchell, Wingels and Ferriero as spares worse than:
Moore - Handzus - McGinn
Winchester - Desjardins - Mitchell?
This move gives us a very deep bottom 6, a forth line that will play much more than 4 mins/game in the playoffs therefore saving energy/injury for the big guys, bumps Handzus down to the forth line, etc, etc.
