If you'd rather gone into the playoffs again with smithson and geoffrion, I'm sure we could have gone that route. There was an offer of 1 million dollars for a steak dinner, but the chef declined to serve us.

I like the NHL network guy, he basically said with Gaustad that the true contenders don't always need the huge trade, they're already a good club. Filling specific roles to plug holes in the roster is equally important when a team is tuning up for a playoff run.

Huge price for a 3rd line perennial 10 goal scorer.

Let's hope this guy is the most intangible guy in the league....

Now that we've added 2 forwards, it's going to be a hard decision on who sits.... atleast we don't have to worry if Smithson is playing.

I think a couple good points here:

I bet we see either Smith or Bourque sent back tonight after the game.

I like it, I love it....

Great trade. I'm thrilled that we kept our prospects and parted with the 1st. If Suter leaves and, god forbid, Weber follows, we will be dancing that our defense corp has:
Blum
Josi
Ekhom
Ellis

IMO Poile made the exact two moves he needed-- improved top 6 wing and improved 4th line center. I would have liked one more defensive upgrade (veteran over Cube/Hillen) but this team is loaded for bear. Really, really solid.

Some moan and groan about Poile doing nothing and being too conservative.
Now Poile makes needed moves to improve the team and now people gripe about being too aggressive/overpay.

We're a better team for the run = I'm good with it.

Just wish I could watch the new guys live tonight.

Best part of all this is not giving up a single roster player.

We have a great pospect pool so essentially skipping a year in the draft is fine with me.

Poile tried to get Nash so you can't blame him. His offer -reportedly- was the best.

There are ways to be agressive without overpaying. See Shero getting Neal last year as one of the many examples.

We are investing a lot in this playoff run getting 3 impending UFAs. So the success of these moves will be judged by how we do in the playoffs, bottom line.

Assuming that Gaustad works out here and we make it to at least the Western Finals then I think this trade was worth it. However, a 1st is a HUGE price to pay when in years past a player like this could have been had for a 3rd. We did get the 5th out of it but yiiikes. That 1st is a little steep. I hope that come late May, I've forgotten all about giving up the 1st because my new adopted team is playing for the cup!

Absolutely loved Goose and will miss him. His contract demands were just too rich for what he deserves.

Just know he has 0 career playoff goals, which has been one of the biggest knocks on him. But he's a true heart and soul player who will show up every shift. You guys will love him.

A first is an uncertain commodity and typically won't be part of the NHL team for at least several years. I have no problem with Poile alternating between saving and spending his draft picks.

They won't be there tonight or playing is my guess. They'll have a day or two to get things together. AK has to clear a visa and travel in and Gaustad is probably going to have to finish up some stuff before coming. I'd expect them to meet the team in Nashville after Carolina game and then be ready for the Florida game on Saturday

AK will meet the team in Carolina. Not sure what Gaustad is going to be doing.

Tough to lose Goose as hes a good guy off the ice and a tough player on it. great pk'er, faceoff guy and a leader in the room. He really took it to heart the Miller/Lucic incident and played with a chip on his shoulder

id love to see him back after July 1, but I hope he gets a chance to go far with the Preds. Really like a lot about your team (Suter, weber, Fisher, pretty much everything but the Kostitsyns lol)

I'm thinking a 2nd would have gotten Gaustad. We didn't have one this year so the choice was probably something like two 3rds, or closer to value for the Sabres, a 1st and Buffalo throws in a pick to slightly even it more (where the 4th came from).

My assumption is we initially wanted Derek Roy and Buffalo said something along the lines of "Okay, give us a 1st rounder and a Wilson/Ellis/whoever" and Poile said "absolutely not but we'll take Gaustad if you take the pick."

102.5 said we were in a bidding war with DRW for Gaustad. Glad he's on our roster and not theirs.

That makes sense. Also glad not to see him in Detriot!

I heard neither Detroit or Philly would part with a 1st rounder so we got him.

Detroit didn't have a 1st round pick, btw. Traded it to Tampa to get Kyle Quincy.

Yeah you're right. Detroit didn't have one, Philly wouldn't part with theirs.

You guys just became a better team. Goose (his nic-name) isn't going to score many goals for you but you have a valuable tool otherwise. Goose will fight, he hits, blocks shots like a brick wall. He is one of the top 3 faceoff guys in the league, he is a leader, skates his ass off and plays first team penalty kill. Goose has played on the power play as a big body in front and can definitely center a third line.

You will love his work ethic and attitude. He is good with the media and in the community. Goose will be yet another reason for me to root for the Nashville Preds. I have always liked you guys. I grew up listening to Pete Weber, and loved watching JP Dumontt score game winning goals for you after he left Buffalo.
Good luck in the playoffs. Buffalo will cheer you on..

Echoing what the other Buffalo posters have said. Goose is a great guy, and he'll bring it night in and night out. Good luck!
