Document The Transactions of the Gainey/Gauthier Era

My therapist (didn't need one BEFORE the Gainey/Gauthier era)....hmmm says that I should write things down it helps channel the ANGER!!!

So reflecting back on the Gainey / Gauthier era, ad honestly trying to be fair.

The Good:

1) Trading Craig Rivet to San Jose for Georges and a pick (Max)
2) Signing Eric Cole

I can't honestly think of anything else.

The Bad

1) Trading D'Agonstini for Palushaj
2) Trading Halak for Eller without even creating a bidding war at the draft!
3) Signing Cammaleri for too much money
4) Signing Gionta for too much term
5) Knee Jerk reaction on Cammaleri again without creating demand!

The Ugly

1) Letting Koivu/Kovalev/Komi and all the other UFAs go for NOTHING.
2) Refusing to negociate during the season with agents; what damage THAT did!
3) Took a small team (Koivu era) and made them SMALLER (Gomez Era)
4) Trading Gomez while losing our best D prospect in McD0 AND losing Higgins!
5) Creating teams with little pushback physically and are SO EASY to play against

There...I feel better.

I'm sure I missed a few though so please feel free to add!

This thread again.

Here lemme save everyone some time: Gainey and Gauthier are TERRIBLE. They are disrespectful to the media, they lie and are vegetarian (yuck!!). We have a team full of smurfs and useless fighters - how dare they trade a heart-and-sole player like Andrei Kovalev???

Anyway, I'm excited to see Patrick Roy as GM and Coach and Grigengko as the first line centre next year. Fail for nail!

ps: Dominc Moore for a 2nd round pick?!?!?!? What a stupid trade.

Should you be Gauthier's biggest fan right now considering how much you hate Kostitsyn?

But we missed out on trading Plekanec + Tinordi for Radulov to fully turn the Habs into the Remparts NHL Edition.

Yea... I was going to make that a positive, but I really want to see how that 2nd round pick turns out.

The fact that Buffalo got a 1st rounder for Gustand did drive me a little crazy though.

Over under on when AK will be a healthy scratch. Trotz is a real coach who won't take AK for long.... either he learns to bring it EVER night on a hard working club or he's in the dog house..

So I'm going with 10 games.

So now, when players reject the management's offer, it's a good move by the Habs brass?

Gionta at 2 years left is bad, but Cole with 3 years left is good? Despite one having a major injury history and them both being same age. I mean, they seem near identical to me. Both have helped our team.

I don't think you can complain we mucked up the Cammy deal and also complain about signing him in the first place. Pick one. Personally I think the contract wasn't the issue. Inflated yes, but not so much as to make him hard to move.

I'm a Gauthier fan so far. I think Kaberle can be moved, so that's a non-issue. Every other move I like so far. Gomez is next. (Hated the Halak move at first, but he was right, tho would have liked to see him shop more).

I posted this in another thread. The ugly:

Under the Gainey/Gauthier era, Sergei Kostitsyn and Andrei Kostitsyn, whom at one point many thought were untouchable have been collectively traded for:

- the rights to Dan Ellis (belonged to Habs for less than 24 hrs)
- Dustin Boyd (1G in 10 games)
- a 2nd rounder in 2013
- return of a conditional 5th rounder

PIERRE GAUTHIER

In Gauthier's case, the way he's handled himself in regards to anticipating our needs and evaluating talent may speak more than this list below.

The Home Runs
- Erik Cole
- Blake Geoffrion, Robert Slaney, 2nd rounder for Hal Gill
- Bringing Alexei Emelin over

The Good
- Dominic Moore for a 2nd rounder (bad: not re-signing him)
- Jeff Halpern (bad: not re-signing him/Blair Betts)
- James Wisniewski for a 2nd rounder (bad: not even attempting to re-sign him)
- Rene Bourque, Patrick Holland and 2013 2nd rounder for Mike Cammalleri, Karri Ramo and 2012 5th rounder
- Raphael Diaz

The Decent/OK/Whatever
- Mike Blunden for Ryan Russell
- Kyle Klubertanz
- Alex Henry
- Karri Ramo for Cedrick Desjardins
- Paul Mara for 5th rounder
- Brent Sopel and Nigel Dawes for Ben Maxwell and 4th rounder (traded back)
- Drew MacIntyre for Brett Festerling
- Petteri Nokelainen and Garrett Stafford for Brock Trotter and 7th rounder

TBD
- Lars Eller, Ian Schultz for Jaroslav Halak
- Michael Bournival for Ryan O'Byrne
- Mark Mitera for Mathieu Carle
- Tomas Kaberle for Jaroslav Spacek (could also be abysmal)

The Bad
- Aaron Palushaj for Matt D'Agostini
- Alex Picard
- Jeff Woywitka
- Chris Campoli
- Blair Betts debacle

The Abysmal
- Brett Festerling and 5th rounder for Max Lapierre
- Sergei Kostitsyn for...yeah I got nothing.

Tanguay belongs in the abysmal list to me. We gave a first and second rounder for a guy we let walk away 1 year later, who signed for half the money of the contract we took him on. That's abysmal.

This is a fair point and I understand where you're coming from. Strictly speaking, though, acquiring Tanguay for what we paid was not abysmal-worthy for me. He was decent (if not ****ing soft), but the abysmal part was indeed letting him walk after we gave that up, yes (but not acquiring him in the first place).

Agree, I'd add Blunden for Russel as decent also.

In regards to Kaberle, I would put that in the TBA, Kaberle has been decent, putting up points, playing 3rd pairing mintues, and I think if Markov comes back strong next year, we can get a good return for Kaberle (see Zidlicky).

Yep, Blunden was a decent move (forgot about him).

Kaberle could probably be put in TBA, but the 2 extra years on his deal are tough to swallow at his age/declining play. As I said, I'm not a hater of his, just that it was unnecessary considering the implications of getting him (shield him 5-on-5, the length of his deal).

Eller is on pace to doubling his production from last year. His progression isn't over, and his numbers will most likely improve next year.

Halak for Eller was a good deal.
