The same people that think Conklin has trade value are the same people that think Holland isn't to blame for this. How about we listen to someone who predicted in JUNE that Conklin did not belong in the NHL. Yeah, I was one of those people.
Conklin played his way OUT of the NHL LAST year. That was obvious to me as a fan. That was obvious to the Blues management. It was obvious to 28 other GMs who refused to offer him a contract (despite also seeing him play in 2009)...but it was Holland and his 2009 time machine that was the only one to think Conklin belonged in the NHL. After a few appearances, Babcock and the rest of the Red Wings now were convinced he didn't belong in this league. So Howard gets used 20 in a row, back-to-back, good teams, bad teams, it's clear Babcock just knows he can't use this guy.
And what did Holland do? Fix his mistake? Get a guy that can allow our MVP to stay fresh? Nope. He did nothing. He waited until Howard got hurt. And even THEN his prized signing couldn't do his job.
There should be no scenario on this earth where Conklin stays and J-Mac goes. Conklin has ZERO value. Not one NHL team has any use for him. A contender can't afford to forfeit games. A pretender is better off evaluating their own talent than play a guy who will NOT be in the NHL next year. So he has ZERO value.
I don't buy the garbage about J-Mac needing the work in GR either! Give him the work here! 20 games left. Give him 9 or 10 of them and keep Howard fresh. You risk completely demoralizing that entire GR roster if J-Mac walks in. Those guys already know that Nyquist and Smith deserve to be here, but if J-Mac hasn't earned a job over Conklin then as a GR prospect I would just lose all faith in this NHL pursuit. Do the right thing Holland. You signed the worst possible guy. You refused to fix your mistake for 5-months and running. A solution fell in your lap. Fix it!
I think they will send Joey back to GR, he has a 2 way deal and doesn't have to clear waivers.
Conks could conceivably be used in a trade as a throw in player and you can bring Joey back up and down as many times as you want.
Why risk giving a guy away for nothing?
There's no risk. Nobody wanted him over the summer, and nobody wants him now. But he might help GR make the playoffs, since he can't be any worse than Pearce or McCollum.

He is fine for the regular season though!
I'd rather have Mac's postseason clean slate than Conklin's version of playoff experience...
You guys are reading way too much into his role for the playoffs. For now, JMac is still a far better regular season option, and at last check, we still have another month and change of that to go.
At least with him up now, we can actually, you know, rest Howard a bit down the stretch and not play him Arturs Irbe circa 2001-esque minutes. Poor guy was on pace for 70+ starts; other than Brodeur, has a goalie ever won a Cup playing that many games in a season?
Good point. When is the last time a team lost their starting goalie, injury or otherwise, and won the Cup?
Niemi? Osgood in 2008? Cam Ward? We all remember what happened to the Oilers when they lost Rolie the Goalie.
Not sure any of those situations relate here.
None of those situations relate here at all. NONE of those teams starters were lost due to injuries, but POOR play. There is a difference if you didn't know. Niemi and Ward weren't typical backups, but young guys with obvious potential to be starters. Again, what goalies that are currently available would actually be able to fill in for Howard if need be and help us to the Cup? None. Is there a young goalie with potential out there we can grab like Ward and Niemi? Is there a veteran goalie with Stanley Cup experience like Osgood out there? Didn't think so.
I think I may have worded that poorly. I sincerely meant "I'm not sure if those situations apply." I wasn't trying anything.
Nah, it's cool, I already edited that out before I saw your reply. I don't think those situations necessarily apply, as stated above. I don't even know if any goalies are available right now, as it seems Nabokov is definitely not.
Wait, were some people actually thinking Conklin might get claimed. I'm being serious. Did people honestly think he had value to anybody? Wow. Conklin will never play in the NHL again. Last year proved he belonged in the ECHL. 29 teams figured that out. And now we have too. Buh bye.
