Lines/Pairings/Special Teams for the Playoff Push

Alright, the roster is defined now.

What are your lines and special teams units?

Let's assume Tyson Barrie is sent back to Lake Erie once O'Byrne is activated.

Forwards:

Paul Stastny
Matt Duchene
Ryan O'Reilly
Gabriel Landeskog
Milan Hejduk
Steve Downie
Mark Olver
Jay McClement
Jamie McGinn
Kevin Porter
Cody McLeod
Peter Mueller
David Jones
Chuck Kobasew

Defense:

Erik Johnson
Jan Hejda
Shane O'Brien
Ryan O'Byrne
Ryan Wilson
Matt Hunwick
Stefan Elliott

---

List the following:

Even Strength

LW-C-RW
LW-C-RW
LW-C-RW
LW-C-RW

LD-RD
LD-RD
LD-RD

Powerplay

LW-C-RW
LD-RD

LW-C-RW
LD-RD

Penalty kill

C-W
C-W
C-W

(Defense usually all play PK, some more than others, but need three forward pairings)

Landeskog - O'Reilly - Downie
Duchene - Stastny - Hejduk
McLeod - McClement - Kobasew
McGinn - Olver - Jones

O'Brien - Johnson
Hejda - O'Byrne
Wilson - Hunwick

I just don't see Peter Mueller holding up for much longer. I hold my breath anytime he's contacted.

And yes, Matt Hunwick over Stefan Elliott. Hunwick has earned it with his recent play.

I honestly have a real hard time deciding between McLeod/Olver/Kobasew as the healthy scratch.

McLeod: As much criticism as we give him, very effective when playing disciplined. A menace on the forecheck and somebody the opponent has to take notice of out there. Provides a lot of leadership and if a fight has to take place, we'd rather he fights than anybody else(including McGinn).

Olver: Has played great, but we all wonder whether the drop-off is coming and if he's the likely one to be scratched. The truth is he has the tenacity and forechecking to play on the 4th line as well, so it's not like he has to be in an offensive role only.

Kobasew: Dude has totally changed his game now. Realizes he wasn't scoring and his role has changed because of it. He has embraced his 4th line responsibility. Hitting everything that moves and has become a very good PKer as well. Crucial to have the penalty killing ability with Winnik and Galiardi traded.

You can blame Sacco for that he played him in a position where he couldn't succeed. Sacco thought he could score 20 again. I knew Kobasew would be good once they limit his ice time.

As for who sits I hope it Mcleod. Yeah, he played great tonight but that is a rarity for him. Olver was great tonight but this was his first bad game.

Landeskog-ROR-Downie
Olver-Duchene-Mueller
Jones-Stastny-Hejduk
McGinn-Jay-Kobasew

I like SHadow d pairings. Well I don't like them but they're the best 6 the avs have.

O'Brien - Johnson
Hejda - O'Byrne
Wilson - Hunwick

Honestly, way too hard and will depend on where to slot McGinn.. I think the only 2 things we can say for sure is:

Landeskog-O'Reilly-Downie and of McCleod-McClement-Kobasew (whoever is in the lineup) will be slotted on the 4th line.. other than that there are too many different possible combinations with the chance of Olver and McGinn each getting 4th line time.

I'll do the PP:

Duchene - Stastny - Hejduk
Mueller - Johnson

Landeskog - O'Reilly - Downie
Elliott - Hunwick/Olver

I think we might need to get used to the idea of Duchene playing on the wing of Stastny. I agree with many of you on here that Duchene is a natural center and has played there the majority of his hockey career (if not all of it) but Sacco seems pretty adamant about the Dutchy-Stas line combination.. I don't HATE it, I'd personally prefer him centering the likes of Mueller, Olver, Duke? But whatever. I hope Duchene can keep playing the way he was tonight because he went off! Great game by the kid. And if him and Stas can get some solid chemistry together, I for one am really excited.

The thing with sitting Olver is that it means Duchene goes back to centre as we don't have other dudes who can play centre(Downie can but we'd be crazy to mess with that line). I'm not opposed to that, but maybe tonight's game was a sign of things to come for Duchene-Stastny together.

Out of the three players TPS posted about, I hope Kobasew doesn't get benched.

I think our bottom line should be a game-by-game basis. If we need grit--add McLeod. If we need whatever the hell Kobasew brings... use him.

Damn Freud, you're cold-blooded... although I probably agree with you. I'd keep Olver up, though. Don't care about LEM, care about our playoff drive. We can carry two extra forwards.

It will all depend on how much Sacco values keeping Duchene on the wing. IMO, Olver >>> Duchene at center, but I don't think Sacco will do it. McLeod will get the hook.

If someone goes down, we can always recall him. Odds are Hejduk/Mueller might break down at some point.

I don't think Olver deserves to sit. Hejduk should. But life isn't fair.

I'm really happy about the way both McLeod and Kobasew are playing. Both have embraced their role and play with discipline. Having McClement as the defensive conscience on that line makes them so much more secure in their play.

I don't think Olver should get benched or sent down period.

I wish someone would have asked Sacco this question in the post game.

"We have a deep, talented group of forwards that give me a lot of options. We'll see how practice goes this week and then make the most appropriate decision."

Can't expect anything good from Sacco.

Sacco said McGinn probably will be on the 3rd line.

It sucks for Olver, but that's the way it goes. He'll be on the team next year.

So if Olver sits/goes down, then the lines must be changed to move Duchene back to centre.

I like this, I'd like to see Mcginn play with one of our top 3 centers, i think he can contribute more than in SJ. If he's given a consistent opportunity he can play up to a 20 goal guy easy. Ive followed him since his rookie yr in ott, he can be more than what his role was in SJ, that teams top 6 depth is impossible to crack, he just needs the opportunity.

I really don't like the thought of Duchene on a line with Jones and McGinn. They don't fit his skill set at all, IMO.

Landeskog/O'Reilly/Downie
Jones/Stastny/Mueller
Olver/Duchene/Hejduk
McGinn/McClemment/Kobasew

Just makes so much more sense. McGinn can score, but he's not a scoring winger. And Duchene isn't a grinding, pass the puck, drive the net player. I don't understand why this is a hard decision, but as usual, Sacco will find a way to mess it up.
