Again, we'll agree to disagree. Lidstrom all about money? Sakic? Etc, etc. Garrison isn't on their level, but those are just a couple guys who stayed with their team. Even Smithson decided to stay. He could cash in like Garrison may, but it's not "all about the money." Not for everyone. If he does run after the money, seeya, and lol.
Yes and people forgetting, tax free state, affordable housing, good place to raise kids...that DOES factor in.
Those are elite guys who are going to get paid regardless of where they are and they also played for excellent franchises. Garrison will get overpaid, whereas the other two were set for life since 22 years old.
Which is why I said he wasn't on their level, and then provided Smithson who decided to stay where he was until he was moved. He could have gotten more in FA as well, FA can be (unless you're Vokoun, apparently) a virtual cash cow.
AGAIN, you're putting FAR too much emphasis on something you really don't know (and, admittedly, neither do I) concerning Garrison. You're assuming he's just another greedy player and is only going to run after the cash. You guys aren't taking into account what AG just posted about the state itself, but also that he's on a top pairing with an elite defenseman. The team is on its way up, and he may not get the same chance on a different team. He has to learn teammates all over again. And I'm sure that it's not lost on him the opportunities he's gotten here.
Just because one may be able to get more in FA, not everyone is eager to do so. A guy like Tallon, with his reputation and him doing everything similar here as he did in Chicago, telling you and your agent that you're vital to the team and it's success, that can go a long way. It's not like it's coming from Howson or Keenan, it's coming from an incredibly well respected and well thought of GM in Tallon.
That has a lot of weight to it. Again, we'll have to wait and see what the next several months bring us.

And perhaps some weight to playing for Dineen...lots of factors we dont know.
The team is improving. Tallon's plan is working. We'll have homegrown talent take the ice in increasing numbers, which is good for the purse and for the psyche.
However, it is undeniable that as the team improves to a playoff caliper level, if we truly want to see a systematic change to an elite level, an upgrade in the self imposed cap will be needed. As our own players get better, they need new contracts that need more outlay. If we want that true #1 center, Hubs may be it on the cheap for a couple of years, but eventually -- maybe within 3 years -- we have to be in a position to spend more annually.
That's why making the playoffs this year by "overachieving" by some standards is very very important to propel us forward financially and emotionally.
If we can "overachieve" for the next couple of years, we can be like Nashville -- actually better. But success feeds success. It's skill, hard work, and luck. Teams like Tampa had the ingredients to be a contender since they won the cup but the results have been very inconsistent.
If we are good, lucky, and work hard, we can get there. We can even pick up a Parise or a Ryan or a Nash eventually, but owners absolutely will need to come to a point where they take a risk in payroll.

excellent post. Agreed 100%. Very difficult to have everyone on the same page in the long run though. Lets take baby steps and start by making the post season this year.
Well if unwilling to move our core guys (which seems smart), I'd imagine that look for another big FA for us this summer? That's about the only way I can imagine us landing a true #1 C. Haven't checked the FA market to see if any are even slated to be a FA.
There aren't really any #1 centers on the UFA market.
