Lack of a deal: opportunities for next year?

No Nash. Good. Very expensive, handicaps our team in the future with his contract and we give up several good young assets.

With the amount of cap space heading into next season, could you see NYR making a bid for Suter or Weber? Possible?

The team's offense seems to be set with players like Kreider and Miller being given chances to slot in over the next 2-3 yrs. We will see guys like Dubinsky or Boyle move down the lineup in the event a Kreider or Miller performs.

Seems to be the orgranization's plan on offense in the near term.

I like Suter and Weber but don't necessarily see the point. We've already got Staal, Girardi, McD, MDZ and Sauer with McI, Erixon, Stralman, Eminger, Valentenko etc. in the system. Not that they are the best to have, but you're not going to have 6 top tier defenseman.

I'd rather use the cap space to get offense. And his name is Zach Parise. We didn't unload the farm for Nash when we're in 1st, we're not going to do it over the summer. IMO, Parise is target #1. He is a proven, hard nosed player who would seemingly fit the system.

Get me Parise!

Suter will definitely be available, Preds will go hard at him. He'll get over 5m IMO and it's not sure how much more over than NYR could/should pay.

IF as believed Weber will ultimately bolt, to the NW, then ultimately he goes to Vancouver, although maybe Edmonton is close enough. When it is close enough next year for that reality to sink in, theoretically Preds may get more by moving him sooner than later, although that assumes the desperation factor will not be excessively great. Preds have world class G, would like to keep Suter, and ultimately, given reality he'll move, are best served moving Weber for the best offer.

While it would be nice to keep EVERYONE, and given the potential of McD + MDZ, + that Erixon, even were he movable has not shown enough that we'd maximize trade return, means keeping Staal as he returns to full form and recognizing we might be best served by converting Girardi, directly or indirectly, with assets we can live with, for Weber.

Either that or a young sniper.

They have a bit of a messy ownership situation, and it's not unreasonable to think he'd look to sign elsewhere. Minnesota will have the money to sign him, and he's a native of the state. Just an example. There could be a bidding war for his services.

It's not a foregone conclusion that he leaves NJ, but I'd say it's more likely than not that he's playing elsewhere next year.

It would be great if he'd take a 1 year 7.5mil Hossa style contract. Our team will essentially be the same next year as this year (barring injuries), and that edition would really put us over the top... win a cup and maybe he signs long term.

Will be a very tricky off-season...Based on the current 64.3 cap number Sather has around 16 million to play with.

RFAs
MDZ
Stralman
Bickel

UFA's
Feds
Prust
Mitchell
Eminger
Woywitka
Scott
Biron

and
Kreider

I don't know why anyone wants Suter or Weber. While I don't think the D is as good as the 1.95 GAA they're currently sporting. The D and goaltending is still aloowing 1.95 GAA. We need Parise a lot more.

If Parise doesn't sign here then trading for Nash may be the way to go.

Either Weekes or McLennan quipped on NHLnet last night that Minn trading for Tom Gilbert was pre-emptive to making a run at Suter & Parise this summer becasue they all played together in some fashion back in high school.

FWIW.

My money is still on Detroit ending up with both Suter and Parise.

No chance of that happening with a new CBA on the horizon.

Ideally, we could use both and I'd like to get both.

Girardi + x = Weber

$$$ + chance to stick it to cheapskates in NJ = Parise, 1 yr 6ish m, then he's off for top dollar.

opportunity for the top prospects that did not get dealt

I expect Erixon to be in the top 6. McIlrath to start in the AHL, why rush him as Bickel likely comes back to be the goon on D

Kreider has a shot at top line LW if he has a good camp
I see Miller being a better two way guy. 2nd coming of Hagelin
Thomas I see in the minors but he will be giving a shot

all could see time in NY next yr. They wont rush them but there will be spots

Barring any deals..........Anisimov, Stepan, Gaborik, Hagelin, Richards, Callahan, Dubinsky, Boyle, Prust , Rupp are all back..............Mitchell will come back on the cheap for sure........let Feds walk upfront

That leaves 2 spots for kids.............1 may be a Parise but its not that easy. Do not bother w Nash

outside shot of a guy like Lindberg taking that 4th line C spot too

nahhh this is a real simple offseason........heck sign Prust and Biron now, they are taking so I bet it happens........Mitchell is resigned for sure on the cheap, 13th F

RFAs ............all get resigned
MDZ.......AA type raise
Stralman.......1 million, 2 yr
Bickel........try and get away with a 2way but he likely gets a one way 600 K

UFA's
Feds...........gone
Eminger.........gone
Woywitka........two way?
Scott......likely goes regardless of play

kids with a shot
Kreider......think he gets a LW spot
Miller.........JT and Christian battle for 3rd line RW spot
Thomas
Lindberg......4th line C?

gonna guess no big FA signing

Kreider, Stepan, Gaborik
Hagelin, Richards, Callahan
Dubinsky, Anisimov, Miller
Rupp, Boyle, Prust
Mitchell

McDonaugh, Girardi
Staal, Del Zotto
Erixon, Sauer
Stralman, Bickel

it's not a given Parise signs here. Good to keep options open on pursuing another elite top 3 scorer.

I don't see the need to keep Strahlman with Erixon coming into a top 6 regular next season.

It's unlikely anyone takes a one-year deal this year, with labor uncertainty on the horizon. Could be that guys are getting smaller figures in the next CBA. Marquee free agents will want to lock themselves into guaranteed money.

i won't deny i was very intrigued by adding a top talent in Nash.
Sather offered an agressive package that "should've" persuaded
a reasonable GM.

not making the right trade in Febuary, doesn't bother me as much
as missing out in July. If we want to pick up another top scorer, Parise or otherwise its going to cost 6m+

We can't keep every prospect either, so we might have to make a move to strengthen the bottom six as well with a more "productive"
alternative to Boyle.

If we can get through March healthy i think we'll be a strong playoff
team. easier said than done.

really looking forward to seeing what Krieder brings next year, because if we bring this same level of completeness along with
consistent offense, we are going to be a force for years to come.

Don't see that as a possibility. This summer is likely the last time UFAs will be able to sign lifetime contracts that also allow the teams to manipulate the cap hit. There's not guarantee changes will be made in the new CBA, but I can't imagine a player wanting to take that chance. Parise will sign a ~10 year deal for close to 70M.

Erixon needs to show he's ready first.

Stralman is RFA. Qualify him, and if someone forces him out of a spot, then you can easily trade or waive him.

And it never hurts to have depth. Who thought we'd rely on Woywitka and Bickel as much as we have?

Long-time lurker, hesitant poster here.

I think this is going to be a pretty interesting off-season, since the cupboard is full of prospects and the roster has some good, but not great talent in certain spots (e.g. LW). At some point, Slats and Co. are going to have to put together a quantity-for-quality deal, akin to what was rumoured for Nash.

There simply won't be enough roster spots for some of these guys. Count me among the masses that would love it to be Bobby Ryan, but either way, something is going to have to give, and Sather will have to package some potential together.
