For current players, I'd still give the C to Timonen before Giroux. For a possible future captain... maybe Schenn.
For some reason I expect Coburn to be captain of the Flyers down the road if someone older like Briere or Timonen does get it this go around.
Maybe it's a shot in the dark, but I just get that feeling that if Giroux doesn't get it, it will go to a vet. Then when that vet leaves, Coburn is next in line.

Coburn's problem I find is that he doesn't lead by example as well as some other players do.
If you want to question whether he was the right fit to lead THIS team, go ahead. If you had big issues with his being a bar hopper (I don't, but hey), go ahead. If you had issues with him being an innately quiet person, and therefore not liking attention, go ahead. It IS something that a captain has to deal with.
But people just throw the guy under the bus. He gave everything he ever had on the ice. He should be praised for his time here.
I thought he dogged it pretty bad at times last season. IMO his wrist injury may have prevented him from being +50% FO% but it shouldn't have hurt his skating. I wasn't displeased to see him go.
Honestly, I'd like Max Talbot to be captain. G has enough on his shoulders already. Max is a proven winner, tough, emotional, can handle the media, and has a big personality. Things could be different behind close doors, but that's my perception.
Can you imagine if they give it to Roo and then next year, Pronger returns? No thanks, roll with 3 alternates and then see what happens in the summer. If Pronger does come back you know there will be a power struggle.
If we are going to give the captaincy to somebody this year, I'd like to see it go to Timonen. In fact, I'd like to see Timonen get the C as long as he's playing for this team, which realistically should only be this year and next. After that, give Giroux the letter. I'm not a fan of handing the captaincy to young players. That said, Laviolette, the assistants, and Holmgren know much more about the players' character in the locker room than I do, so I trust the correct decision will be made. This isn't a franchise where we need to throw the C on a young player in order to hype him up for ticket sales.
I love G more than most rational humans, and there is no way I'd give it to him over Timonen. That's a slap in the face, it's his team, let him ride out his tenure in control.

I agree. I can't see them giving the C to anyone unless they're absolutely, 100% positive that Pronger's never coming back. Prongs is an alpha dog, I don't think he's capable of letting someone else be the #1 leadership guy, even if it's in name only. He and Giroux already had that public screaming match - if Giroux got the C and Pronger came back, Prongs would steamroller him.
I can't dispute that at all, but his effort on the ice was NEVER an issue.
I'm starting to become very sensitive about Richards stuff now haha. I feel like everybody just re-invents their entire image of a player because they are now gone. I don't get it. Mike Richards was ADORED in this city. He was "the next Bobby Clarke". He busted his ass 100% of the time.

On the topic at hand, I feel Giroux has similar effort. It's great.
Edit:
Mike Richards probably had/has half of the talent of a Jeff Carter, and also certainly less talent than someone like Giroux. Mike Richards is in the NHL because of his effort. He gets more out of his skillset than almost anyone I've ever seen.
I guess you didn't see that episode of Orange Line where the focused on Richards. There was more then one player who commented that Richards was the type of guy who didn't pay attention to the coaches and pretty much dogged it at practice. Like an ice skating Iverson.

We talkin' bout practice? Practice. Not even a game. We talkin' bout practice.
