The Gionta hate is hilarious considering how our overall possession game went from good to bad when he got injured. (to god awfull under Cunneyworth)
Guy has lead our team in goals for the last two straight years. That team was a playoff team.
Edit: Also, lol at the fact that Penner and Gio is worse for Plek and Eller's value than what they got all season. See who Plekanec is playing with right now.... he'd probably throw a party if we got him Penner after that.
I've never really liked Gionta. If he was a $2 million per year 3rd line grinder it wouldn't bother me if he stayed but he isn't.
Gionta doesn't seem to have any chemistry with Eller or Plekanec so that is what makes him irrelevant to me. I would rather get rid of him and try someone else that has a chance to have chemistry with Pleks or Eller rather than getting rid of Eller or Pleks to try and find someone to play with Gionta.

SALARY CAP: $66,000,000; CAP PAYROLL: $65,603,333; BONUSES: $1,300,000
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $396,667
Caveat: this is dream world and we get the two top UFAs and Molson decides to eat the Gomez and Kaberle money because he wants to win now.
1) Draft Grigorenko or similar centre
2) Gomez to minors or Europe or trade (lol)
3) Kaberle to minors or Europe or trade (semi-lol)
4) Sign Price to 8 year deal 5-6-7-8-8-7-5-3
5) Sign Subban to 8 year deal 2-3-4-5-5-6-4-4
6) Extend Pacioretty to JVR similar deal (cap hit increase in 2013-14)
7) Get Parise to front loaded deal 8-8-8-7-7-5-4-3
8) Get Suter to front loaded deal 8-8-8-7-7-5-4-3
9) Try to get Moen to sign at same price as now
10) Re-sign White, Eller, Geoffrion, Blunden, Staubitz (or similar)
This should get us close to 66M and a pretty good team. May have to deal Plekanec, Gionta or Desharnais to make it work salary wise.

this is our roster for next year if we basically maintain the status quo...
modest raises for most of our RFA's, plus big raises for our two "gems" (Subban ~5M$ & Price ~6M$ is what I expect, +/- 500-750k)
and re-signing Moen/Darche at roughly same cap hit.
amazingly (and sadly) leaves us with a roster slightly over the current cap, with zero upgrades...
That Gomez/Kaberle & the 11.5M$ of cap space they use up NEED to be moved, pretty much goes without saying...
but until it happens, looks like we'll be in line for another "playoff's at best/ 6-10th" type season for 2012-2013.

I've seen the posts that he's not high on Grigorenko, but haven't heard/seen anything regarding Galchenyuk - where did you see that one?
"This might come as a surprise to you, but I think the Habs will draft Alex Galchenyuk, as McCagg has been clear about the fact that drafting Grigo in the top5 would be a risk accord to Timmins."

I read that as McCagg's rumour about Grigorenko, and Pouliot's speculation about Galchenyuk - two different things, not a rumour that Timmins prefers Galchenyuk to Grigorenko.

Isn't Q the highest scoring league in the CHL? If we prefer Galchenyuk, then there's no reason to finish top 2 as i'm quite certain the oilers will either draft a dman or grigorenko....
plus Galchenyuk is essentially American so if we have a worry about drafting a lazy russian, that fear can be put to rest.

10 years ago maybe but the CHL leagues have pretty much equalized. There isn't really a meaningful difference in what a point means in each league anymore.
This is what we should aim for :
Dump Gomez and Kaberle, trade Weber. Sign Suter, Parise, Rupp, Gaustad and a big mean UFA d-man.
Put Moen with Plekanec and Gionta, and you have a shutdown line that can provide an offensive spark.
Cole - Desharnais - Pacioretty
Parise - Eller - Bourque
Moen - Plekanec - Gionta
Rupp - Gaustad - White
