Just gonna post my 2 cents on the waiver issue again...

The NHL doesn't view Radulov's KHL contract as valid. He signed it under false pretenses. So if he doesn't have a valid contract, he can't have ever played for the KHL in their eyes. Since he never legally played for the KHL, section 13.23 doesn't apply.

I heard Paul Fenton, on the radio HNIC, state that it is his understanding that Radulov could come over this year and play without being exposed to waivers. I'm going with Fenton (i.e., I agree with you as well!)

The team's party line was that he couldn't leave in the first place. His second contract was signed there after the poaching agreement. We hope that 13.23 doesn't interfere, but, pragmatism requires remaining wary about it. When/if he tries to return, we see exactly how all of these conflicting provisions interact.

There really isn't much reason to be concerned. I don't see Poile bringing Radulov over until he is 100% certain that he does not need to pass through waivers. If he were to be exposed to them, he stays until the summer (which is likely to happen anyway).

In the first round, Rads team won game 1 vs AK Bars. So much for sweep.

???

I thought their first game is tomorrow (3/1)? Don't see any result on the KHL or team websites yet...

Definitely! When I saw that I thought to myself it would really stink if you were playing a team across the continent from your city!

Guys who are under contract with an NHL coming back from overseas aren't exposed to waivers. If a team signs a guy who is a free agent, they are exposed to waivers, i.e. Nabokov.

From an ESPN article posted on 2-13-12.

The Predators still retain Radulov’s rights, and should he decide to return, he would not be required to pass through waivers. And while the Predators would welcome him back, GM David Poile told ESPN.com Monday there is absolutely no indication Radulov wants to return to Nashville or is making plans to do so either in the near or distant future.

Guys who are under contract and loaned aren't exposed to waivers, but, the years the player is overseas count as contract years .. i.e. Sergei Korostin in 2010-11 (contract terminated prior to the 2011-12 season), Filatov, or Johan Fransson of the Kings system. It's essentially no different than loaning a player to the ECHL for contract purposes.

That is where the point of contention was with Radulov. If the league was going to go by the provisions of section 13.23, Radulov would have had to been "on loan" which would have let his last season expire. It looks like the league is allowing the suspension under 9.1 trump 13.23 .... good news if Radulov tries to return during any season from a waiver perspective.

I wouldn't be surprised to see this type scenario spelled out in the next CBA after Radulov revealed several gaps in the current document.

as is denis kulyash, who was at times considered one of the best defensemen outside the NHL--one that we drafted and tried to bring over. He didn't want to give up being a superstar in the KHL to ride the bus in the AHL, though.

good players in the KHL, awful players in the NHL. Pihlstrom had great wheels, but absolutely no hands and the least accurate shot I've seen in some time.

Koistinen was miserable defensively, and not great offensively either.

completely forgot about him, too. I did, for some odd reason, think of Kirill Safronov the other day. I remember getting him and simon gamache in a trade for Ben Simon and Tomas Kloucek. I was so excited....hahaha...what a useless trade in retrospect!

which of course gives one a little concern about how well radulov's game would translate over here... methinks it will take him a bit to get use to playing against NHL caliber defensemen again...

it would be an adjustment for sure, but he put up 26 goals here in his second season. I doubt he's regressed since then (although also not progressed as much as he could have staying here). Watching him on this feed right now he looks like a man amongst boys. But there's no concern...we have him on the hook for <$1m for a season so if he ends up tanking (highly unlikely), no worries.

it's pretty much concensus among brighter hockey minds than us that radulov is, far and away, the best player in the world not in the NHL. It's one thing to go to the KHL and carve out a decent career the way Ville and Pihlstrom have...but Radulov has dominated. You're talking about a guy that's won the MVP every year he's been over there.
