I've been reading biased hockey reviews raving about "Goon" as the closest thing to modern day Slapshot. It's also written by the guys who wrote Superbad and Pineapple Express. Its available on demand right now before hitting the theatres. Has anyone seen it and is it worth watching?
It was filmed here in Winnipeg, in rinks I grew up playing in. They put on open casting calls out for hockey players, plenty of people I know are the extras in it .

I saw it and laughed out loud at least 10 times. It was great, tons of laughs and the hockey and fighting actually looks good. If you never played hockey you may not get a few of the jokes but still worth seeing. One girl sitting behind me in the theatre actually yelled out "****ING HIT HIM!!", ha ha. But that's a Canadian girl for ya
my son just called tonight and is sending me the link to watch at work tomoorow, got to love beingg the boss, said he liked it and that it was based on doug smith is that true or did he get the wrong info

You care to share the link I'd love to watch it! Thanks!

It is based on Doug Smith.
I haven't seen it yet but plan to do so. I have a few friends who have seen it and they all say the same as many in this thread have. Definately not Slapshot caliber, but one of the better hockey movies you'll find and worth the watch.
I probably enjoyed it on Zune a lot more than I would at theater prices. I found it funny at many points, especially the riffing between team mates. The love story was more of a distraction than anything. It's not even close to Slapshot, but I'll be buying it on DVD when it comes out.

Thanks for the replies. I think I will try watching it this weekend with the wife. We watched Your Highness last night, which she hated, so I'm not optimistic that she will like Goon!
