Who was the last guy we drafted in that range? Didn't he bust?

He's certainly the fast riser this year. He and Faksa are all over the place in terms of high end projections. It's going to be interesting to see how far they climb.

I haven't followed prospects closely enough, but what I can get from reading various publications, team needs, etc....here's how I can see it playing out. Edmonton and the Islanders really need defense and I'm not sure they'd strictly go BPA. If I had to guess, I think it would go something like this:

Columbus: Yakupov
Montreal: Grigorenko
Edmonton: Murray
Islanders: Dumba (or maybe they go BPA and take Forsberg)?

After that, it depends who finishes below the Canes.

Toronto or Buffalo would probably go after a Center (Galchenyuk?)
I would guess Tampa might go BPA (Forsberg or Dumba).

So IF Carolina picks 7th, I would guess that Yakupov, Grigorenko, Murray, Dumba, Galchenyuk, and Forsberg are all of that table. Just my guess not knowing as much about these guys that DaveG and others do.

So that leaves a pool of forwards that consist of Collberg, Faksa, Girgensons, Aberg and Gaunce. I don't know much about these guys to know who the Canes should/might want to target if they indeed look at a forward.

EDIT: but given the link to the Kitchener Rangers, I wouldn't be surprised at all with Faksa

Yes. Just playin. But none were as high as 7. I just thought I'd give a shout out to the fine scouting/drafting of Sheldon Ferguson.

03-05 actually looks pretty good until you consider how high the picks were.

In franchise history if you go back to the Whale, you got Ronnie Franchise, Bobby Holik, Jeff O'Neill, JS-gigure and Pronger who they traded away.

And that's just like 5 more picks then the Canes.

I didn't like moving Ladd at the time after not giving him much of a chance and the Johnson pick was just a major screw-up on our part. Staal they couldn't go wrong on. In fact, it was really hard to mess up in that draft unless you're the rangers or oilers.

I think the only 2 first round picks I'd really applaud management for are Ward and Skinner. Ward was farther down in the first round and Skinner was rated a little lower but definitely deserving of his spot of 7th overall so he was a good find.

I'll admit to liking the Boychuk pick at the time but the kid just doesn't seem to get it. Sutter seemed like a bit of a reach at the time but that draft class has turned out to be pretty weak so he's good value. Who knows what they were smoking when they decided to take Paradis.

Not to mention Craig Adams, Sami Kapanen, Marek Malik, Nolan Pratt, Manny Legace, Andrei Nikolishin, Michael Nylander, Geoff Sanderson, Jody Hull, Sylvain Cote, Sylvain Turgeon, Kevin Dineen, Ray Ferraro, Scott Young, Ulf Samuelsson etc.

They really had some great drafting if you think about it. They got lots of guys who played several hundreds of games.

Outside of Yakupov and Grigorenko, the draft seems to be very top heavy with D. I think D prospects are the last thing we need though, so I'm hoping we get one of Faksa, Forsberg, Galyenchuk or Gaunce.

Knyazev and Tanabe got Markov who got Jutin Williams, so that doesn't look that terrible in retrospect (even though I hate simplifying trades like that).

You really don't want to compare those two drafts. If you think we'll get anything close to that without someone major falling I've got bad news for you.

Remind me again, did someone major fall out of the top 5 in that draft?

Your point? This draft isn't even close to 2010, more like 2007. How did the free fallers in that one work out again?

I was just busting your balls with that last one. But my overall point is drafts never go according to plan. It's waaaaay to early to sweat a couple of spots in the order, or set a limit on the number of impact players, or decide whether anyone's falling. It's like worrying about playoff matchups in October.
