Lightning sign Danick Gauthier to 3-year ELC

http://eliteprospects.com/player.php?player=36727

20 year old LW from St. John.

Full warning: The announcer is awful.

Also on twitter: https://twitter.com/#!/elcreido18

Free draft picks and perhaps some toughness for Norfolk/Syracuse to replace Labrie if he makes the roster next year.

He's a big boy. 6'2'', 201 pounds, so a good addition to our prospects with the loss of Ashton.

Holy **** look at that production improvement from last year to this. Those numbers aren't anything to scoff at. Looks like he turned a corner or something during last off season.

Im from SJ. I see him on a weekly basis (season ticket holder). Im very happy about this signing, he has great speed, work ethic and a solid skill-set.

Yeah, pretty amazing. He went from scoring 11 goals and 30 points in 65 games to scoring 41 goals and 72 points in 59 games.

If I didnt know any better I'd say that yzerman had this deal worked out and that's why he felt it was ok to move Ashton.

Interesting.

He's a project, but worth taking the risk. Unlike the midgets who are potting pts in the Q this season, you've got a big boy who won't get pushed around. First year playing top 6 too, so there's room to grow + improve. Defensively I have found him kind of..."meh" ? but he's a worthy project.

Don't know much about this kid. But from stats, and seeing his growth I can imagine in 2 years or so he will be NHL ready. But I will hold complete judgement until I personally see him play a few games.

Worst case scenario, he spontaneously combusts just before blocking a shot headed into an empty net.

He is an overager on a Memorial Cup team, but yeah it's a nice boost. Looks like he put the effort in over the summer and was able to take advantage of some good opportunities and everything payed off.

“I worked a lot on my speed and my strength,’’ Gauthier said. “Those were the two areas I worked on this summer and that (has) helped me a lot on the ice.’’

Sea Dogs head coach Gerard Gallant said Gauthier’s improved conditioning was evident at the beginning of the season.

“His fitness is excellent and he’s a lot stronger and he’s in top shape,’’ the bench boss said. “Now he’s got that extra gear. He paid the price this summer and that’s what it’s all about for these kids (who want to continue their careers after junior).’’
Quote:
Coming into this season, Gauthier had 19 goals in his Quebec Major Junior Hockey League career. And while improved fitness has paid huge dividends for Gauthier, Gallant said the player’s improvement also stems from more opportunities.

Several Sea Dogs graduated to the pro ranks or university hockey after last year, while the club has been plagued with injuries in the first half of this season. Jonathan Huberdeau and Stanislav Galiev have both missed big chunks of the season with injuries.

“I think he always had the talent,’’ Gallant said about Gauthier. “To be fair to Danick, he was mostly on our so-called checking line before this year. He’s definitely a top-two line player on any team in our league.’’

With his increased strength and confidence this year, Gauthier is strong on the puck and has used that strength to put himself in good shooting position. Playing on the first line and first power-play unit has helped, too.
