Jason LaCanfora on twitter:

Quote:
Memo sent to NFL clubs notes an incident with Saints LB Jon Vilma putting up $10K cash for a pre-playoff bounty and also notes that Sean Payton's agent, Mike Ornstein, put up money for a bounty on two occasions. Memo says the actions of Payton and GM Mickey Loomis serves as "conduct detrimental" to the game. Hard not to think steep punishment is coming
NFL has more than 50,000 pages from this investigation and it looks like they have all the facts. Saints can't even try to put this all on Gregg Williams.

Payton's agent putting up money is just crazy, especially if he represents other coaches or players.

Well you can't say Vilma didn't learn anything while he was at Miami.

Just seeing all the reports about the Saints D. I knew there was something fishy about getting punched in the face during our playoff game

http://espn.go.com/blog/nfcsouth/pos...ould-be-severe

If it’s all true -- the Saints were out to harm others and top team officials did nothing to stop it -- I’d look for Goodell to throw the book at the Saints. In the league office, this isn’t a beloved franchise like the Steelers, Giants or Packers. The Saints have angered some important people in recent years.

That means the penalties probably will be severe. But that’s what happens when you push the envelope too hard and for too long.

If the league crushes the Saints, maybe Brees would WANT to leave?

I think it will definitely get worse as more information comes out.

Also, right now the only specific bounty that has come out is the one on Favre in the NFC Championship game. If it comes out that they had similar bounties on top players who are still playing in the NFL, I would expect those teams to go after the Saints.

Might be best for Brees if the NFL takes the franchise tag away from the Saints.

No Brees and no 1st round pick for the Saints next season would be awesome. Can't get much worse than that.

^lol, I was just thinking if I was Brees, time to find another team

When did Tom Benson start to know about this? I keep reading he told them to stop, but if he really wasn't happy, wouldn't he, at some point, put his foot down by doing something about it himself?

I suspect he is the one who may have given the info to the NFL.

You don't get 18,000 documents and 50,000 pages without getting it from someone higher in the organization.

Especially information about Peyton's agent putting money up. That sort of knowledge wouldn't come from a player.

this is looking really bad for them. You've got to think that they had a super bowl bounty that year too against Manning if they had one in the NFC Championship.

What a sick story

Charles Martin would be proud of the actions of Saints ,, As would Forest Gregg

NFL should strip them of multiple 1st round picks , Franchise tag and hit them with hefty fine

They also took out Warner the week before the NFC Championship game. I think that was Warner's last game in the NFL.

Talking with Peter King on NBC’s NFL preview show Saturday night, Dungy recalled that Manning’s neck was wrenched and his helmet ripped off when he took a low hit by Andre Carter, followed by a high hit by Phillip Daniels.

Yeah, I read he has said the NFL has the team's full cooperation, but I kinda wonder did he give it to the NFL first or when asked? I've read the NFL looked into a bounty program by the Saints in ~09, so if Benson is the one who blew the whistle, did he not know then or was he giving people a chance to put an end to it?

I guess we won't really know til more details come out

Spygate and Denver circumventing the cap in the mid-late 90's is still worse.
Spygate was basically an intern filming signals. How is this not way worse?

Let me when someone other than Ndamukong Suh gets made an example on for crotch stomps, eye pokes, chop blocks, and the other ridiculous things that no one sees and thus don't talk about. I'm sure no one on ESPN will talk about that.

If the NFL does their investigation right, we might as well not have a draft for all the penalties that would be handed down. The Saints got caught, just like Krys Barch was the only one who got caught yelling at PK Subban.

Maybe he's the one who snitched because he felt he wasn't rewarded for taking out Warner.

Eric Edholm ‏ @Eric_Edhol
Just asked #Panthers WR Steve Smith about #Saints bounty story. His reaction: "Doesn't surprise me. Wouldn't expect anything less from them"

This doesn't surprise me at all either. That attack on Steve Smith seemed like it was more than just about frustration: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Sq7gVv7I4MA

I haven't read the other thread yet, so not sure if some of these tweets were covered, but:

Chris Harris ‏ @ChrisHarrisNFL
@daringantt doesn't surprise me Everyone does it they're just the ones who got caught. It's part of the NFL culture

Chris Harris ‏ @ChrisHarrisNFL
@daringantt personally I think it's more common than some would like to think......but I know nothing

mike freeman ‏ @realfreemancbs
Second, I can't tell you how many texts, DMs, I'm getting from players telling me this happens all across the league.

mike freeman ‏ @realfreemancbs
Plus, 1 HUGE difference between this case and others: first case I've heard where GM, head coach and assistants were all involved.

Pat Kirwan ‏ @PatKirwanCBS
There could be lawsuits to follow by players injured in games against the Saints during the 2009-11 seasons.Lawers have been texting me

I agree with Freeman. We have to know that this happened around the league. Chris Harris has been around the block a few times and he's basically confirmed it. But to have it basically be an organization-wide program where the coaches were the runs running the show seems to be a different story. And that's what makes it so shocking/disgusting
