Name that WHA Trophy

Hi guys...[first post]

I have in my possession, a Trophy from the WHA. Over time, someone has taken the nameplate but it still has the recipients names on it. I'm trying to figure out what the trophy was for...but the dates and names seem to be leading me on a wild goose chase....Maybe one of you can solve the mystery.

The trophy must be from the Winnipeg Jets days prior to joining the NHL.

It has Ulf Nilsson -1974-75, then Anders Hedberg 1975-76, Anders Hedberg 1976-77, Ulf Nilsson 1977-78, then Kent Nilsson 1978-79

It a big trophy.
I can't figure it out...I've tried to contact the players..offered to a museum..talked to Joe Daley...nobody can figure it out.

Help.

I don't think it's this, cuz you couldn't win rookie of the year TWICE. hm....

Rookie Of The Year
The Lou Kaplan Trophy - - named after ?????????????????????

1972-73 = TERRY CAFFERY (New England Whalers)
1973-74 = MARK HOWE (Houston Aeros)
1974-75 = ANDERS HEDBERG (Winnipeg Jets)
1975-76 = MARK NAPIER (Toronto Toros)
1976-77 = GEORGE LYLE (New England Whalers)
1977-78 = KENT NILSSON (Winnipeg Jets)
1978-79 = WAYNE GRETZKY (Indianapolis Racers/Edmonton Oilers)

Looks like the team`s regular season leading scorer received the trophy.

Hey, are you from the Vintage Goalie Mask forum? I lurk over there all the time. I really want to make my own but just don't have the time (2 young kids + league hockey pretty much eats it all up!) .

About your trophy, there is no statistical category that I can find that was led by U. Nilsson/Hedberg/K. Nilsson in the order you mentioned, so I don't think it could be any kind of scoring based award. It can't be a playoff based award since the Jets didn't make it in 74-75. Could it be some kind of team MVP award? (although it would be hard to see why it wouldn't have been won by Hull for 74-75 and 75-76). Or maybe some sort of award for Best European?

Sorry, I'm no help. I'm sure somebody with encyclopaedic knowledge will come by soon .

No, Bobby Hull was the scoring leader for 74-75 and 75-76.

Have you tried the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame or the Manitoba Sports Hall of Fame?

Yes I am THAT GUY from the Vintage Goalie Mask Forum. I was barred by the creator for calling him a name...he's such a prima donna, OOPS....there I go again

Anyway...

I see you guys are coming up with all the same answers I got...it's a tough one.
I did offer it to the Manitoba Hockey Hall of Fame with no interest. I was even going to GIVE IT TO THEM....not anymore.

I even offered it to a sportswriter in Winnipeg when the guys were in town for the Jets first game...said he was going to come and get it to give to Anders...and once again - a no-show.

Warren Skorodenski came over to my house and viewed it...thought it was great.
So I just may keep it.

Of course I didn't earn it. If one of the guys wants it for sentimental reasons...i'd gladly give it to them.
I never scored that many goals..I'm a goalie, I just STOP THEM!

Thanks for the help so far...the mystery continues.
[if I can post a pic , I will]

I bet its a trophy for star selections, like the Molson Cup used to be for Canadian NHL teams.

Itīs not the "Viking Award". Even if Nilsson to my surprise actually won it once when playing in WHA (thought it was NHL-exclusive, must have been "best swede i North America" for a few years...). http://www.eliteprospects.com/awards...ing%20Award%22 Donīt remember their ever being another swedish trophy.

Itīs not the best european/swedish pointgetter:
- Winner U A K
74-75 U Nilsson 120 100 -
75-76 Hedberg 114 105 -
76-77 Hedberg 124 131 -
77-78 U Nilsson 126 122 107
78-79 K Nilsson - - 107

And not Winnipegs best pointgetter either, Hull was that in 74/75 and 75/76.

Would guess itīs either WHA:s or Winnipeg Jets own trophy going to the most prominent european/non north american.

Molson Cup? I'm pretty sure that Hull never won it and Kent Nilsson did, so that fits. Fran Huck won it, but that would have been in 73-74 before this trophy was made perhaps.
