50-Year Anniversary of Wilt's 100-Point Game

Today, March 2, 2012, is the 50th anniversary of Wilt's amazing 100-point game.

March 2, 1962. Hershey, Pennsylvania. 4,000 fans present. No TV.

Wilt had 69 points at the end of three. When he found that out, he really turned on the jets and got the 100. Wiki's account:

Quote:
He scored his 79th point with 7:51 left, breaking his own record and sending the crowd into a frenzy. The 4,124 spectators screamed, "Give it to Wilt! Give it to Wilt!"[21] After he reached 80, the crowd yelled for 100. Chamberlain thought, "Man, these people are tough. I'm tired. I've got 80 points and no one has ever scored 80." The Warriors continued giving Chamberlain the ball.[50] Warrior Al Attles later explained, "We wanted that Wilt got the record, because we all liked him." Attles himself led by example, passing up on an easy layup so that Chamberlain could score points 88 and 89, five minutes before the end.
Quote:
After missing his first shot, Luckenbill rebounded and passed to Chamberlain, but he missed again. Luckenbill again rebounded and this time passed to Ruklick: instead of going for an easy layup, he immediately lobbed a high pass to Chamberlain.[57] With 46 seconds left, Chamberlain got free from the five Knicks, jumped high and put the ball into the basket to hit the century mark.

For those of you who are interested, NBATV will be rebroadcasting a special at 11 p.m. tonight. Channel 472 on Time Warner Cable in the southern California area.

Nexus: Wilt Chamberlain played for the Los Angeles Lakers from 1969 through 1973, sharing the Fabulous Forum with the Los Angeles Kings, an expansion team from 1967.

Wilt then asked a couple of Knicks players for a ride home after the game.

Wilt's off-court records are more impressive.

Hmmmm makes me wonder a bit. You guys think Sittlers 10 point game will ever be broken? I think it will one day. Even Gagne had eight this year of all people.

I actually hesitated in the early afternoon because was concerned of some individuals' reactions here...should have known better, but I thought some people might actually be interested in the show in NBATV.

That old saying should (but apparently doesn't) apply to bulletin boards as well: If you have nothing nice to say, then maybe you shouldn't say anything at all.

Sorry for the inconvenience, ghost.

Hey, I appreciate basketball. Canada's most profitable invention!

edit: Or should I say coming from the mind of a Canadian.

Naysmith was a Hab fan. (Maroon).

Look at how many Canadians play the game today.

"We got next after next after next".

It's marked OT folks. It's fine. Leave the moderating to the mods.

Nope, my apologies entirely.

I was honestly just kidding around and being sarcastic and sorry if that didn't come across. Trust me, I am the last poster here who would really care what goes where or anything like that.

Wilts accomplishments on and off the court are legendary. I may hate basketball but athletic accomplishments of his magnitude are absolutely noteworthy.

Apologies again if I seemed to be serious, I was just being a smartbutt which is always a dumb idea for me.

I'm in a knot. I can't wait for the game to start and I have already been to a game today. I can't wait for tonight's game. I think its Carters time to get a couple of points. Should be a battle either way.

Thanks Ron.

.. with a big asist from the official scorer.

But it looks like Wilt had some help getting to 100 as well. I'll look for another showing of the NBATV special on Wilt - it should be interesting.

I loved watching Wilt play with his cool headhand. And his ("attempted") freethrows were always an adventure.

LA was quite lucky to have 2 of the greatest centers in the game play here. (for you very young punks - I mean Kareem as the second one)

Send a message via AIM to The Tikkanen
Don't think that record will be broken with the specialized coaching and instant access to stats.
