^all heavyweight or capable of fighting heavies... Guys like phillips, redden, and fisher could hold their own back then too.

vs brashear...and? leclair and therien are big...but therien cant fight and didn't...leclair can hold his own. Philly was a soft team. No tough guys except for brashear.

Holy **** look at the gamesheet penalties

Take a look at phillie's roster...it's not that tough back then...all those soft euros...it's bound to happen...look who chara took on timander...fisher dominated the big soft handzus...If there's a brawl, and one team has a handful of tough guys, and the other has one, and a bunch of europeans of course there will be some lopsided bouts.
If the Flyers were healthy this brawl never would have happened. That OTT team had no balls. They reached for a washed up Ray to try and find an answer for TOR pushing them around.
Look at the players that the Flyers were missing that night.

Primeau
Fedoruk (before he was Boogied)
Roenick

Neil and Simpson wouldn't have been is such a rush to drop 'em when the next shift came out and they would be lined up against Primeau and Fedoruk. Even Fisher would have been across from Roenick instead of Handzus.

It was a great brawl so I am glad it worked out the way it did but I just don't think it would have happened if the Flyers were healthy.

Back in the early 80's, there was a great game full of fights between the NORTH stars and BRUINS.

So you're whole point is that neil and simpson would have been scared to fight therefor wouldn't? I have to disagree with that. They are both tough customers and could/would have fought anyone the flyers had to offer...

Fedoruk=neil

todd simpson would take primeau who isn't a usual fighter...he's just tall and would drop em a handful of times a year against other "not quite" fighters...simpson is there to fight and pk...that's it. Simpson had 17 fights in one season.

Then fisher against roenick? fisher is so much stronger. I would give it to fisher. Roenick or handzus? doesn't make much of a difference...handzus is bigger but roenick is griddier. But fisher is griddier and stronger then both.

So i don't know what you're point is that the brawl would not have happened?

And honestly, the brawls of the '00s, especially after the lockout, are child's play compared to how it used to be. In the past twenty years, Avs-Wings are the hands down champs of the brawl. They legit HATED each other. It wasn't just the fanbases, it wasn't just a "Oh yeah, we're rivals"... no, those guys flat out wanted to kill each other. And that's what made it great. Anyway.

Thirty, forty years ago? Those brawls are legendary. Not even the Avs and Wings come close. Plain and simple.
A big reason why the Avs-Wings became so heated was Claude Lemieux. The guy was a human gun powder, it could explode at anytime with him being there. See that's what pests do, they put oil on the flame. If it's just tough guys then you have staged fights, but with pests, they are the one that creates genuine hate, they are the one that involve the whole roster. That's why I don't understand why tough guys like Burke say they want to take the pests out of the game. To me it makes the game less manly because it takes away the tension and the possibly brawls are far less present. Look at this year, it's like all the pests have gone into a rehabilitation boot camp, they all have calmed down and they've stopped being dirty. It makes for clean boring hockey. To me hockey is war and that should be no-holds-barred.

Another good semi-brawl was the one between the Canucks and Hawks around two years ago. The tension was building and building because the Nucks have big chips on their shoulders all the time and could never defeat the Hawks. And then it exploded. I remember Burrows pulling the hairs of Keith.

Primeau took Simpson handley in two fights. Once when Simpson was with OTT and once with FLA.

Simpson was still a tough dude though, I agree. As, is Neil who lost the fight you attached to Fedoruk.

My point is that team had a ton of talent but no stones. One of the reasons why the Leafs pushed them around with guys like Tucker and Corson. The Sens took advantage of a depleted Flyers line up to try and make a point that they wouldn't be pushed around. I don't think they would have acted the same way if they Flyers had a healthy line up. If Simpson or Neil would have been challenged they would have accepted because they are tough dudes but they would not have initiated that brawl like they did.

They saw a soft line up and decided they could make a point but probably didn't expect guys like Recchi, Sharp or LeClair to push back.

Bottom line, my point is that brawl probably doesn't happen if Primeau, Fedoruk, etc are on the next shift instead of Somak and Handzus.
