That would be true if everyone ahead of Subban and Desharnais that were available accepted the invites, but, even if Canada doesn't have the level of rejection the US is known for, worst-case scenario, if Subban is given an invite and accepts, Subban will play as a #5-7. Desharnais is doubtful at best and, if he accepted an invite, he'll likely play on the bottom-6.

I don't know why I can picture Emelin trying to give one of his trademark body check during the championship, but this time against Desharnais playing for Team Canada, then Desharnais turning around, Emelin missing him and ending directly on his defensive partner's knee : Andrei Markov.

Did you see the team last year? Methot, Gragnani on defense .... Vermette up front.

Subban will get invited for sure. DD has a good chance, especially if he hits 65-70 points.

I wouldn't be surprised if Emelin wasn't invited. He left a career in Russia, as an adult, to play in North America. I think that's more of a shot to Russian hockey than a 17 year old coming over here to play. I bet they're offended by his gesture and wouldn't invite him.

That's just my interpretation though.

I think he should reject it cause he's gotta be seriously banged up by now. Every game there's something....a slash, a blast into the post, an Emelin death hipcheck, he took a puck off the hand last night.

I'd rather see him have a relaxing summer and rest up as much as he can so he can give us a repeat performance of this year in 2012-2013.

The rest should definitely go if they get the call.

Desharnais will get invited over Hodgson and Roy, IMO.

And it's the Worlds, so unless its some weird year where everyone accepts, I only expect to see two of those guys on the team next year.

For example, last year, here is the depth at centre (we finished 5th);

Duchene, Vermette, Spezza, Zajac, Tavares.

Here is who was available besides the 5 listed above (not sure who got invites and who didn't);
Weiss, Little, MacArthur, Staal, Gagner, Horcoff, Brassard, McDonald, Morrison, Richards, Ribeiro.

I'm positive at least 3, if not more got invited and turned it down.

The winger(s) are even worse when you think about the amount of good players who declined/didn't go. Iginla, Tanguay, Morrow, Benn... that's just a few.

The defense was also very bad - I won't even go over who didn't go, but when you ice Scalzo, Gragnani, and Methot ... it's no wonder we finished 5th. The only Olympic level talent on the club is Pietrangelo and maybe, on an outside chance, Brent Burns.

Right now, it's so hard to tell who will get invited due to so many teams being within a win or two of the games.

One guy I expect to be there, if the Avalanche don't make it, is Ryan O'Reilly. Guy is a phenomenal hockey player.

This tournament is built for young guys because the veterans usually back out unless they are guys who typically wouldn't be picked for Team Canada.

Vermette was the oldest player on the team last year at 28-years-old.

We shall see about that. Both have experience in International tournaments. Desharnais has none.

So does Tom Pyatt..

Even as a huge Pyatt fan, international experience doesn't always mean everything.

DD on international ice would be disgustingly sick. I don't even know what he'd do with the extra space.

He'll probably be invited over Hodgson, but I'm pretty sure that despite a bad season, Roy will get an invite before DD.

The reason I'm not sold on Roy getting invited is the multiple rumours out of Buffalo of an extremely bad attitude this year. Who knows if it's true or not.

Of the 13 forwards from last years Canadian World Championship team, Desharnais has outscored 9 of them this season. The only 4 with more points are James Neal, Jordan Eberle, Jason Spezza and John Tavares. Of the 14 forwards from Canada's 2010 World Championship team, only 5 of those players have produced more points this season. Now I know there will be different players on this years club however I find there to be no reason why DD should not get an invite.

Fun fact, that 2nd line 3rd line player rene bourque was on the 2010 Canada Roster, again, no reason why Desharnais doesn't get an invite.

Knowing him, he will play for sure.... And come back injured next September for the training camp.

If I was Habs owner, I would have him sign a full discharge if he would be injured in that tournament playing for his home country. If he's injured, the NHL contract expires right then.

Step 1 : Let Markov play
Step 2 : Markov is injured
Step 3 : Blame Gauthier

If I'm MTL I would encourage him to play actually.

See how he does, if his knee holds up. If everything is fine, this should do him some good since he hasn't play in a long time.

And if he gets hurt again, he will most likely retire (insurance money), or even if he doesn't, MTL can use that 5.75M during the offseason knowing he will be on LTIR.

Better have him blow his knee out again (knock on wood) in May then in October.

Do discharges of that type even exist? If so, I assume it would cost the same as any other buyout.

Barring an injury, Nokelainen will get serious consideration. He was a regular on the team that won gold last year, and actually scored the game-winner in the final. The Finns usually have fairly defensive 3rd and 4th lines, Nokelainen would probably do fine.

Habs players at the WHC?

Well we all know the Habs are not making the playoffs. What players can we expect will go to the Worlds in mid May?

My list:

Canada: Price, Subban
USA: Pacioretty, Cole?
Switzerland: Weber, Diaz
Czech Republic: Plekanec, Kaberle?
Denmark: Eller
Slovakia: Budaj

Subban will go because of his WJC pedigree, and the fact he's a young, up and coming defenceman that might have a chance of making Team Canada in the next Olympics.

Hockey Canada loves giving international experience to potential Olympians. Not only that, but his skating ability will be a real asset on the bigger ice, another thing Canada needs to keep in mind for Sochi.
