Frustrating game to watch. Alot of posts hit by the Wings, and they just didn't capitalize on their chances. Goals against are of course off Kronwall's skate (again, this seems to happen every other game) and off a horrible eye-bleeding turnover by Stuart.
I also think everyone on the team is determined to get injured now so we are healthy throughout the playoffs, or at least it seems like it. With Datsyuk just getting back on the ice Sunday, I wouldn't be surprised if we don't see him until after the West coast trip, which could be brutal, for several reasons.
They said 3 weeks maximum...He had surgery on Feb 20th, so on March 12 it will be 3 weeks, the first game on the Westcoast trip is March 13th, so he will play at the latest at L.A
I know Semin is an impending UFA. I also know he would be delighted to resign in Detroit having played with Dac (whom he repeatedly called his favorite player). And I know he has more talent than Flip, Helm, and whatever first rounder we can draft. His problems are mostly in his head, and I can see them easily repaired here. Remember Hull?
Yes, I believe that if you can improve your roster to win the Cup now, you do it now, farm be damned. With the current roster we cannot win.

The same Hull who had (albeit grudgingly) fit in with Hitchcock in Dallas (and won a Cup doing so) and who was already established as a first ballot HoFer? I think you're doing a disservice to Hull, here.
Also, is this deal after the season or at the deadline? If you're trading for his rights, no way it takes that type of package. If it's at the deadline, you're not gutting the farm with such a trade, you're gutting a good chunk of quality depth while ramping up for a playoff run.

This one isn't just on Stuart though, imho. I replayed that play about 4 times to see what happened. Stu's in front of the net with Kronwall battling with the forward in the near corner. Filppula joins Kronner and the puck battle starts drifting towards the back board towards the net. Kronner is standing now on the far board, watching, while Stu abandons the front spot to go in directly behind the net to help Filppula. Stu then dumps the puck straight back behind him along the back board. Kane is standing ALONE on the far side. Another Hawk skates straight in front of the net who gets a dish from Kane.
Where are the other two forwards and Kronwall? (Answer: Not skating, but watching apparently.)
Only Fil and Stu were engaged in battling for the puck.
Dr. Rahmani certainly downgraded his commercials by ditching Pavel for Lidstrom. I like the captain and the average viewer can understand his English better, but come on, the Datsyuk commercials were awesome!!
Doubt that anyone knows exactly what Smith's full potential is, but I think he can be better than Kronwall. I like Kronwall's offense and open ice hitting, but don't think he's great in his own zone. He's certainly not physical in the defensive end either- opposing players have to know by now that you only have to watch out for him until they cross the red line. He'll turn your lights out coming out of your own zone along the boards, but you're good to go once you gain center ice.
I think Smith is more physical in the defensive zone and way more likely to make opposing forwards pay a price in the corners or in front of the net. Great offensive instincts and skating too, so as he gains experience, I'm hoping/expecting that he'll develop into a #2 (or #1 if we're lucky) d-man. Nik jr is good and having a good offensive year, but I think Smith's overall ceiling is higher.

Strength down the middle is very very important. look at all the great teams now and see how much they are strong down the middle.
guy known as a lazy russian for those 2 is akin to hockey suicide. Wings would be instantly transform into soft euro team who can't win worth a damn.
But of course, you think Helm is useless and you dont understand why people rate Filppula highly.
If it was any other player making that pass on the GWG, then we would see 10 pages how that player is useless. But it was Stuart (board's favourite) and then not a single post.
The game was tight. We scored one nice goal. We were the better team all game long.
They got a lucky bounce which went in and they got a gift from Stuart and that was the game.
We had several posts and we deserved to win, but sometimes you lose even though you deserve to win.
Z was the best player on the ice, that was great to see.

Emery did not have to make any difficult saves. The Wings beat him, but he was lucky.
Babcock has to work on PP and PK.

Agree, I think Chicago would be a very favorable playoff matchup for us. I wouldn't mind playing them one bit and think we could beat them in 6 games.

And yet some posters here assume we'd absolutely slay the Hwaks in the postseason.
Yeah that is a concern of mine. I think with a healthy line up, in a seven game series we would beat them. It would by no means be a cake walk. They were supposed to get run over by Vancouver last year and barely lost. The Blackhawk's can compete with any team in the league. The Wings outplayed them though and that counts for something, albeit not much. Stuart made one of the dumbest plays I have ever seen. God forbid if that was Ericsson I would be scared to even read this board for the next three months.
Chicago is really good in the offensive zone.
But their puck movement through neutral ice is ugly. It's kind of astonishing how bad they are in this regard.
Your avatar is starting to make little sense. Shouldn't we be bribing the refs just to call no penalties so we can stay five on five and not ice either of our terrible special teams units?

And not a single poster came out and said Stuart lost us the game. Some even blamed Hudler.

We clearly outplayed the Hawks throughout the game, while missing several players. Sign me up to the list. We beat the Hawks in 5.

I would say 5.
Oh please. On several levels, Ari. Every single post right after the game talked about Stu messing that one up. Did you bother to read the GDT? CB even refers to his own post above. My post below begged to differ with the others.
Wings are not a level higher than Chicago. When those guys show up, they can stay with us pretty well. I find the games more entertaining when we play them, or SJ and Van, but I don't relish meeting any of them in the playoffs if I just want to coast by.
