Question about icing rule?

I know that the guilty team who ice's the puck has to keep their 5 man unit on the ice but what if a player is injured? Or, more to the point, fakes an injury to get off the ice? Is there a length of time he has to sit out? Rest of period? Etc. I'm sure this has been thought of somewhere along the line and since I have yet to see it employed there must be some rule to prevent this strategy. Anyone?

The offending team can take an injured player off the ice. There is no rule as to how long he must remain off the ice.

81.4 Line Change on Icing - A team that is in violation of this rule shall not be permitted to make any player substitutions prior to the ensuing face-off. Should the stoppage of play following the icing infraction coincide with a commercial time-out, or should the offending team elect to utilize their team time-out at this stoppage of play, they are still not permitted to make any player substitutions. However, a team shall be permitted to make a player substitution to replace a goalkeeper who had been substituted for an extra attacker, to replace an injured player, or when a penalty has been assessed which affects the on-ice strength of either team. The determination of players on ice will be made when the puck leaves the offending player’s stick.

Thanks. Wow, talk about a loop hole? I always thought with a guy like Scott (before he was traded) you'd have him fake an injury to get off but I figured there had to be some penalty. Looks like something that they'll take a look at if a team uses this loop hole to their advantage in a big game or playoffs.

not really a loophole. They will get it when you fake the injury and step on the ice 10 seconds later

And then what? THAT'S my point. Is there a penalty for such action or not? In soccer there is NOT. Guys come off the stretcher and back in the game.

Can't compare it to soccer. When a stretcher is on the field, the player HAS to leave the field on it - if he wants or not.

Nothing will happen and players don't do this. They will take their time on the bench before they come back. I'm sure there is nothing in the rules about it and it's a decision the ref has to make and is allowed to make

In all the time that this rule is in place, have you ever heard of this actually happening?

The officials do a great job of getting the right players on the ice.

Non issue, IMO

I think that logistically it would be difficult to suddenly fake an injury after the whistle is blown on an icing call. I've never heard of that happening.

I'm sure it happens all the time. Sometimes the icing is happening during a change. Heck, we have been able to get the wrong player to serve a penalty.
