I think Bob would have to go and replaced by someone for $900K-1M, and the rest of that money go toward Suter. I could see him taking $6.75M per for a long-term deal with a contender.

The Kovalchuk rule only affects contracts going beyond age 41 (highly unlikely at Suter's age). So as long as they stick to the normal de-escalation rules (that Homer messed up with Talbot), they should be fine. (Again, barring a big CBA change).

Again, I'd be surprised if he tops 7 mill.
It would be a contract similar to Kovalchuk's. High salary for the years you expect him to play, $1MM for the years until 41 he won't play. And the highest possible amount through the first years to make the difference in de-escalation as big as possible.

Or it is a "short" contract, but that would be rich. Timonen's contract is/was manageable, so will be Suter at $7.5+MM with the current upper limit.

Slater takes less penalties... He does what needs to be done on the 4th. We have guys that can throw if need be. And He'll be cheaper that Gaustad.... I was going to plug Gaustad in, but for the dollar Slater fills that hole.

As well I estimated a 68mil Cap... not the $69 mil I have been seeing on these lineups... so that is another mil (if it happens) that could go towards Suter.

No it means the MAB and Gus are not ready and they needed to get bigger once they lost Chris.

This is not true.

They were candidly admitting that Carle, Timonen, Coburn, and Meszaros were not good enough to anchor a team playing in front of an AHL-caliber goaltender.

Now that Bryzgalov is playing well, you notice him, but you still don't notice the defense taking care of business without Pronger, Timonen, or Meszaros.

Granted Carle and Coburn would not have been okay in that scenario minus the additions of Kubina and Grossman, but they have both played effectively given bigger roles with Timonen and Meszaros out, even despite Carle's problems with the puck.

Our defense has been very good all year. Not all world like it was when we had Pronger, Richards, and Carter, but certainly very good.

I'm glad Bryzgalov is playing like he gives a damn. If this continues and everyone gets healthy, we have a shot to really compete in the playoffs.

Wellwood is definitely NHL-ready.

Hartnell - Giroux - Jagr
vanRiemsdyk - Schenn - Voracek
Read - Briere - Simmonds
Talbot - Couturier - Wellwood
Rinaldo

That's 12 top 9 forwards (if you assume Talbot is a top 9 forward.)

We could have that next year if we really want.

yes, wellwood should definitely be penciled into next year's lineup. he's very solid and cheap.

also, gustafsson has shown me enough that he can be a capable third-pairing d-man. yeah he's a bit small and can get pushed around, but as long as you have a couple of bigger guys like grossman and mez, you can get away with a smallish positional defender.

you afford blue chip players like suter by not spending big bucks on third pair d-men and fourth line players.

I REALLY like how Coburn seems to step up when he's in the #1 role. I think his competitive nature comes alive and we see more of angry Coburn (which we saw some of tonight and against DET). And as we all know, angry Coburn = very good Coburn. I felt like tonight was nearly a flawless game, and to have one of those without several of your top-end starters is extremely impressive. As long as Bryz is confident and playing well, this team is set up well for a long time.

We are gonna have to give something up this offseason. I would love to see Jagr again, but we can't afford all this.

I would like to see us trade briere while he still has some value... and I am not saying that because he has been in a slump... he is getting older and 6.5 mil is a lot.

no trade clause and his family is here so I doubt he would waive it.

My perfect off season with a 69 mill cap.

Carle I would like to bring back because I think he is our second best d-man, but with Suter being available and Kimmo going to be done with his large contract soon we should make a push to sign him long term. That is if players are still willing to sign a long term deal in Philly.

Voracek and Mez can both bring in a lot of picks that can help our farm system out. Voracek I like a lot but his scoring touch I don't see coming around. It was between keeping him or Jagr and I like what Jagr brings to this team even if he only has a couple more seasons left. Mez has a great slap shot and loves to hit, but he is very up and down. I would like to bring in Jackman to replace him.

Gaustad is a big pick up that we need this off season. Sure he is a 4th liner, but he is great on the pk and would be our best face off player. A player like Gaustad would do wonders for this team.

Gustafsson will also be ready to take the 6th D spot. I just hope he works more on not being pushed around as easily. Grossmann with him would help.

We have forwards that can take his spot. We have a need for a #1 defensemen. I would even be willing to bet that wherever jagr does sign he signs for more then he's making this year. Jagr is not a need for this team. I like him a lot think he's great but he does not fit next year unless he's willing to play for about half what he's making this year.

I strongly disagree that he is gonna sign for more. He is 40 years old and has injury issues.

I think we will, and should sign him for around 2 mil.

OK letīs make it a bit more realistic:

Secured positions next Season:

Hartnell: career season --> will stay
Giroux: Face of the franchise, career season --> will stay
JVR: Signs Contract extension injured a lot, so no market for him --> will stay
Schenn: acquired for former face of the franchise, often injured showed his talent sometimes --> will stay
Briere: NTC, Family in Philly, he let flyers rookies life by him --> he will stay 100%
Simmonds: Career Season --> will stay
Couturier: one of the best rookies the flyers ever had --> will stay
Read: Calder Trophy candidate, cheap as hell --> will stay
Talbot: Career Season --> will stay
Rinaldo: impressive rookie with lots of upside as a checking forward, cheap as hell --> will stay
Sestito: See Rinaldo --> will stay
Shelley: knows somthing bad about Snider so he never will give up on him^^ --> will stay
Timomen: If he doesnīt retire --> will stay
Coburn: His wife is the main factor on Flyers Carnival organization --> will stay
Meszaros: the only physical defenseman before GrossmanN --> will stay
Lilja: +35 Contract --> must stay....
Gustaffson: Plays really solid (best +- of all dman) --> will stay
Bourdon: plays solid will stay with a 2way contract
Bryzgalov:..... Bryzgalov....Contract....Snider....
Bobrovsky: He has a high salary and lots of goalies are Free Agents so i donīt think anyone is trading for him --> will stay

That make the following team:

FORWARDS
Scott Hartnell ($4.200m) / Claude Giroux ($3.750m) / ____________
James Van Riemsdyk ($4.250m) / Brayden Schenn ($3.110m) / Daniel Briere ($6.500m)
Wayne Simmonds ($1.750m) / Sean Couturier ($1.375m) / Matt Read ($0.900m)
____________ / Maxime Talbot ($1.750m) /___________
Jody Shelley ($1.100m)

AHL fill ins:
Zac Rinaldo ($0.544m)
Wellwood ($0.580m)
Bourdon ($????m)
Sestito ($????m)

DEFENSEMEN
Kimmo Timonen ($6.333m) / ______________
Braydon Coburn ($4.500m) / ___________
Andrej Meszaros ($4.000m) / Lilja ($0.737m)
Erik Gustafsson ($0.900m)

GOALTENDERS
Ilya Bryzgalov ($5.666m) / Sergei Bobrovsky ($1.750m)

TOTALS (follow @capgeek on Twitter)
SALARY CAP: $52,378,000 CAP PAYROLL: $66,459,444
CAP SPACE (18-man roster): $13,344,444

IMO the following players are questionable

Jaromir Jagr
Jakub Voracek
Blair Betts
Matt Carle
Nicklas Grossman
Pavel Kubina

That left us with 13,344,444 for 5 roster Spots!!

Needs:

1. Replacement for Pronger = #1 Dman
2. Scoring winger RW for Giroux
3. solid defensive dman
4. + 5. energy guys for the 4th line

1. All people talking about Suter or Weber. I donīt buy it.
Especially if we must pay > 7 long term. Sign him for 6,5 long term or go away. Try to sign Stuart from the Red Wings as a free agent 5.0 for 2 years. If you donīt get the two go with Matt Carle because there isnīt someone better than Carle out there. Sign him for 4.2 for two years.

2. I donīt like one UFA Winger of the list. So we only can go with Voracek or Jagr. I really like Jagr as a lot of you, but he is too old and we donīt need another injury plagued season. So i would go with Voracek. Sign him for cheap because he want to sign with a possible contender for the next decade or let him go via trade and sign Jagr instead: So Voracek for 3.0 or leave. Jagr for 2.5.

3. GrossmanN plays really good in the short stint he is here, so itīs nearly save, that he want to sign here and we want this as well. He is 27 so sign him long term for 5 years. 2.8 should do it. And with that he is alot cheaper than Meszaros or a lot other good dman in the league...

So if we think of:

1. Suter 6.5
2. Voracek 3.0
3. GrossmanN 2.8
----------------
12.3

So we have a little bit of money left. But it is really not much

FORWARDS
Scott Hartnell ($4.200m) / Claude Giroux ($3.750m) / Jakub Voracek ($3.000m)
James Van Riemsdyk ($4.250m) / Brayden Schenn ($3.110m) / Daniel Briere ($6.500m)
Wayne Simmonds ($1.750m) / Sean Couturier ($1.375m) / Matt Read ($0.900m)
Eric Wellwood ($0.580m) / Maxime Talbot ($1.750m) / Zac Rinaldo ($0.544m)
Jody Shelley ($1.100m)

DEFENSEMEN
Kimmo Timonen ($6.333m) / Ryan Suter ($6.500m)
Braydon Coburn ($4.500m) / Nicklas Grossman ($2.800m)
Andrej Meszaros ($4.000m) / Erik Gustafsson ($0.900m)
Andreas Lilja ($0.737m)

GOALTENDERS
Ilya Bryzgalov ($5.666m) / Sergei Bobrovsky ($1.750m)

SALARY CAP: $65,995,000; CAP PAYROLL: $66,459,444
CAP SPACE (22-man roster): $0,464,444

So maybe we must switch between Wellwood or Rinaldo and let Shelley play every game. Because i donīt think they waive shelley and let him play in the AHL. Flyers donīt do that with their so important enforcer!!!

The team donīt really changed alot but in my eyes itīs a really realistic prediction.

But pls donīt think itīs really that one i wish how it must be....

But life isnīt about wishfull thinking!!

But he isn't a number 1. Paying him that kind of money means he's a number 1 and people are going to be awfully disappointed with the results.

Suter is not worth 8.3 million dollars. Not even close. He's not even Erik Karlsson good. I'm starting to get sick of people over valuing Ryan Suter. He's a good number 2 guy, no doubt about it. But he isn't a number 1. Paying him that kind of money means he's a number 1 and people are going to be awfully disappointed with the results.
Totally agree. Anything over 6.3 would be absolutly rediculous. He's a great #2.

i don't believe they will let Jagr walk according to his performance to this day.
Seems he and flyers will wait what he will show in playoffs.
If he ll do what he does now, i believe they ll just find spot for him.
Jake is good and he might improve more or less, but i don't really fancy him, definatelly not over 40y.o Jagr.
Also i would like to keep Kubina and Grossmann
Then i'd sell Bob, theres no room with Bryz signing, let some young rookie take his spot.

Ryan Suter is a #1 dman on almost every team besides a very few. He is not a great #2. The guy is a #1 and you can't spin it any other way. I would expect somewhere around Chara and Campbell's money because he is a UFA. Every team will be going for him most likely. Even teams without the salary room.

I know there is a lot of room, but I don't want to jump around and fantasize too much. I want a solid, but realistic team.
