The night Wayne Messmer was tricked into singing the wrong anthem

Wayne wanted to sing part of O Canada in French and contacted the Nordiques. Well these lyrics were 'unofficial' but many in Quebec demanded this version would be the only official one.

Whoever faxed the lyrics to Wayne set him up because the game was going to be televised nationwide in Canada. It became front page news for a couple of days as English Canada exploded in anger.

When and why did Chicago start cheering thru the anthem? Must have taken place between 1984-1991 but when and how did it start?

Wayne's story of being shot

Probably a good number of you already know Wayne Mesmer was shot many years ago. He was shot in April 1994 a bullet lodged in his throat. Here is a 4m you tube story about how it happened... Some of the younger posters this kinda is a short history lesson on singing sensation Wayne Mesmer.

it was game 3 of a playoff series with the oilers, in I want to say 85 but please don't quote me. Hawks were down 2-0, and everyone was so amped for the game they just started yelling. and it's never stopped....

Yes. I went to Game 4 as a kid. Still my favorite game ever attended.

Have fond memories of Chicago Stadium.

I was at the game the night Wayne got shot as I wanted to say goodbye to the Stadium and the Red Sox were playing same weekend at new Comiskey. The Hawks blew out St. Louis that night and I didn't hear about Wayne being shot until we were at the baseball game the next day.

ABSOLUTE TRUE STORY FOLLOWS

My wife who was a second balcony bum in the 80's decided she wanted to see one more game at the Stadium and I went to see Sawx vs Sox. We said we would meet at the Palmer House after the games.

I get there and she is hysterical as she had lost her beloved fisherman's cap at the Hawks game and she begged me to help her find it. I humored her and we took the #20 bus back to the Stadium.

INCREDIBLY the hat was sitting on the sidewalk by the old box office doors UNTOUCHED - even the feather was intact.

That Sunday afternoon game was a rare home game shown on local TV as ABC caried it nationwide - with Al Michaels doing play by play.

Playoffs against Edmonton, most people remember the All Star Game because of the Gulf War going on at that time.
